now lads.... Ive already had 1 problem with this so far and I had 2 change the hl2.exe, i had to make a shortcut and change the target, i dont know if that has anything to do with this problem but when HL2 starts it comes onto the options page at the start, and on the the right hand side the console is open and it says...

does anybody know why it says this, because when i click on start new game nothing happens, can anybody help me? please

I found a reference to it in a mod-making discussion:

The maplist.txt file is used to generate reslists (they contain a list of every file referenced by a particular map), which are then used to build sound caches and for Steam.

http://www.mail-archive.com/[email protected]/msg09171.html

It sounds fairly fundamental so I try the file checking options here and if that doesn't fix it then I'd reinstall the game.

err thanks man, I added the new bit into the command/target thing and then tried the game again and this came up instead...

hmm its says...

You can generate reslists by populating maplist.txt with the list of
maps for your mod (the format matches mapcycle.txt) and then run the
game with the command line "-makereslists -usereslist maplist.txt".

on that site, what does that mean? and how do i do it?

cheers

That's mod-making stuff, so I wouldn't bother trying it.

It obviously looks like the game can't find the maps and information to do with them, so it must be looking in the wrong place. You talked about changing the target?

By the way, clicking on the Half-Life 2 application icon as you would in a normal game can bring up errors. You're only meant to load it through Steam as far as I know. What happens if you try to load HL2 through Steam?
