My current pc specs are Asus P4S8X Motherboard,Radeon 9700 128mb, 512ddr i dont know what speed mhz. I have a 400 watt power supply
I am trying to play half life 2 and my computer is rebooting right as it finishes loading the blurry screen.
I have noo idea what the hell is going on i purchased the game today because i thought my system could handle the game.
Does my system suck or is there a problem with my videocard? I have the latest ati drivers. I dont not have SP2 installed. My computer monitor just goes blanks and I have to reboot my computer everytime i try and start the game. The drivers arent the problem. Is there a problem with my videocard and if there is what would it be and how can i fix it? Could it be a memory problem? I am stumped as to why this is happening I played doom 3 without a problem. Could this be a windows issue maybe? I have an lcd monitor as well might that be an issue? Should my ATI settings be different? PLZZZ HELP Im going crazy. Damn computerr. I saw this game on my friends x600 and had to play it. Now it wont even run.
Thanks for n e info,
Riseaboveyou

sounds very much like over-heating...

what temperatures are your parts running at?

I checked my mobo recently during this fiasco it was at 95 degrees fahrenheit

i have that same exact problem!!!!!!!

can't fix it though......

It's strange that you would reboot in HL2 but not Doom3. Make sure you're not overclocking.

A couple of things you can try include turning the AGP speed of your card down from 8x to 4x in ATI control settings, although it is better to do it in the BIOS as windows sometimes resets it. You can try turning off fast read/write, too. This should relieve stress on your card for a small performance hit, but to be honest this is more of a fix for the game freezing, rather than the comp rebooting.

Other than that, other people will probably know more.

EDIT:- Also do a thorough check for viruses and spyware, too.

thanks for ur suggestions but i already applied all those. I changed the command on the shortcut and it helped me atleast get to the options menu. Once i try to start the actual 1st mission i see the words half life 2 and then my screen goes blank and i need to reboot. If i have bad ram how would i know? I have no other pcs that I could test it on. Is there anything I am overlooking that could cause this to happen. Its happened in other games but during gameplay. I left my computer offf all night and let my videocard rest and tried it again and its a no go. I want to buy a new videocard but im affraid that might not be the solution.
Ne info is appreciated thanks guys

I'm running hl2 awesome on high with a:

Radion 9600 (normal, not pro, not xt etc. )
Asus motherboard (not sure which..)
1.4 ghz Athlon prossesor.
No problem at all. Runs perfect, looks amazing.

Mine used to do stuff like that to, but was because of a virus. got anti virus software?

I had a similar problem with my old nvidia card I fixed it by installing an older driver. 60.42 something like that

I have tried numerous drivers and reinstalling the game and still i am experiencing problems. If it is my card that is overheating what can i do? Second how do i know if my card is a total loss and is just scrap metal. I bought this card with high hopes now i see its sucks. It hasnt performed to its ability i feel. What should i do. this problem is killing me. I dont want to buy another pc and do all that again its pointless till the new windows longhorn i feel.

I called ATI and they told me to download latest mobo agp drivers. So I did and the game worked. Then 15 minutes into playing the screen goes blank and I need to reboot my computer.

I have the same problem with my computer restarting. It happens on some other games as well like Battlefield 1942 or Vietnam. Only happens about 60% of the time though. When I installed the new GeForce drivers the game worked 100% for the first 10ish tries then the same problem started up. Don't have a clue how to fix it, it's annoying.

Strange but true - I had this happen on mine (P4, 2.4GHz, 875PBZ, 1GB RAM, 6800GT, SBLive!) and I thought it was heat. It stopped after a while, and frankly, I don't know what stopped it. It started happening when I would play Aquanox. I thought my card had become damaged, but it's working just fine now. I did download Rivatuner, but didn't really do any tweaking.

It's not your drivers and it's not the age of your system, HL2 and CS source are doing the same to me. My system is new P4 2.6 GHz, 1GB RAM, Geforce 6200. It runs at around 85-90 F for CPU and GPU is around 95-100, all at or within exceptable/normal ranges. But steam will load fine, but as soon as I start one of the newer source based games my computer reboots, Vavle has answered twice first time they said to see the answers section (I mentioned to them that I had all ready tried that but they sent me back to it anyways). The second time they treid to say it was drivers and to update them, I told them I have treid the newest, and older ones (5 sets all together.) I am now waiting for a third response which if the past has been any indication will be at least another 3 weeks.

For god's sake, this problem is 7 months old! Just PM him if you want to know if he still has the problem!
