I did a search on this and found nothing. Anyway... (i think it's new)

Hl2 got a 97% in a magazine called "Score". There are scans of it on the internet, but i warn you. There are some really, REALLY BIG spoilers in it!

Yeah, the spoilers are really really big. I must emphaise this. Trust me, resist temptation.

Must... Resist.... Temptation.....
*lock self in closet, huddles in corner.*

Really sucks that they would put spoilers in the review. Kinda defeats the purpose of playing the game.

It was posted many days ago, even on the main page, in the news.

It's shitty journalism, irresponsible, and apathetic on their part. Also, they're probably thinking that if they put spoilers in their mag, more people will buy their mag.

Thank you. Couldn't have summed up my feelings on the subject much better.

Or maybe they just didn't place as much emphasis on making a spoiler-free review like other mags. It's not "shitty journalism" at all.

Anyway, spoilers could range from "Alyx is really the G-man's daughter" to "There's a gun that fires squirrels in the game". Everyone has a different idea about what a spoiler is. And I doubt anyone outside the Half-Life 2 community would care whether the game is spoilt or not.

Great business practice though. I mean they are in the BUSINESS to make money. If enough people buy it they have done what they have set out to do.

There are other people different from you believe it or not.

No, a review's purpose is to rate a product to give the consumer a basic idea of the quality of the product. Since when have reviewers and editors alike become Mothergoose and tell you the stories or plot segments? It's like going to the movies and you watch the beginning trailers for other films; one of the trailers gives away key plot segments. That's NOT what they're suppose to do. Same goes for movie reviews.

*Still huddles in corner. realizes must not visit HL2.net forums any longer. goodbye*

I couldn't agree any more. But I just happen to not like that particular business practice.

Man, you ruined it for everyone!!! The BSG was Valve's secret weapon. :upstare:

Depends on where you look. Did the article tell you "spoilers" ahead? If so well you (the reader) knew ahead of time. While you do not like it, it bothers me not. Its not the "story" its how you get through the story.

Can you honestly tell me you have never read a book and then saw the movie? Why? The book ruined/spoiled it for you. Same thing here you liked the story/book well enough to see the movie, you like the game well enough that the story (while important) will still be just as fresh once you "act" it out.

yeah well I saw the scans of it and there are massive spoilers in it...trust me...

but, they did show the combine elite in action...those white combine soldiers...they're ****ing incredibly cool looking...

No worries :) until somebody translate it to english.. I live in country where SCORE is from and I dont think you guys can handle our czech language. But if you find scans, there are some very cool pictures.

MY GOD!! Eli is a Harvard man...... o well Cats out of the bag now. Course I cant read whatever language that mag is in, but the pictures just create more hmmmmmmm then spoilers.

Yea....massive spoilers in that mag. And i can't even read that language :hmph:

But, cool spoilers, nonetheless

Since when have reviews been about revealing spoilers to the reader? It is the mag / editor's responsibility to keep the article informative and not spoil something for the readers. Like I mentioned earlier, what happens if every movie, game, or book review begins to present spoilers in their compositions?

So every movie is based on a book? This is irrelevant. A book is a book; it's a final product that's not suppose to provide a review or any type of spoilers for a movie.

Please anyone feel free to PM me why there are spoilers in those pictures. The only way they are spoilers if you have already been previously "spoiled" and knew more then what you wanted in the first place.

Most if not all of those pictures could have 3 or 4 "story" lines behind them.

Again please PM me and (from the picture only) tell me how the story is "spoiled".

O wait Alyx can sit on a crate..... That also blew it for me.

Easy answer to: "what happens if every movie, game, or book review begins to present spoilers in their compositions?"
Dont read/watch/listen to it.

As for the book thing you missed my point. Lets take Lord of the Rings. Do you know how many people have read that book series. Do you know how many people read the book BEFORE watching the movie? Seem to have not "ruined" the success of the movie though. Did you read the story prior to seeing the movie? Why? (unless of course it was like me MANY years ago, yet I dusted them off ad read them again as others did)

It will only "spoil" as much as you let it. Ever seen a movie twice? Read a book twice?

Again for the review IF they said (please someone let me know who can read that) SPOILERS ahead there is no one to "blame" but the person who read it. Dont shoot the messenger.

That is true...they left more questions then they did answers... :rolling:

What seems like an easy answer to some can be frustrating for others. Your answer is basically, "Oh well, who cares". I care. I like to have a way to find out whether something is crap or not. Thankfully, there are so many reviews of HL2 that it's not much of a ballbuster. But, spoilers in reviews is increasing lately. Your answer assumes mags, and other reviewers, don't care much for it's reviewers or retaining / acquiring audiences who disapprove of spoilers and unneccesary content. Sadly, however, it is business, so there is not much that be can be done about it from a consumer stance -- other than moan.

Regarding the LoTR books: Again, it's irrelevant. The books are final products. A lot of movies based on books tend to deviate from the books anyway; this current discussion being one of many reasons why.

My favorite source for 'crap-or-not' is PC Gamer. They have a very good staff and almost never spoil anything. I was a little shocked at first when the author of the HL2 review for PC Gamer warned about spoilers, but I couldn't find any, to be honest...

I pay magazines and reviewers to help me determine whether something is crap-or-not, not to tell me the story or spoilers.

Suprisingly, I agree with you here. At the moment, This seems to be the best, and only, tactic for consumers.

And yeah, sometimes it's not painful seeing a movie that's been spoiled previously by a game or book. I usually don't mind. But sometimes I enjoy something original and clean.

Also, regarding the LoTR books and movie argument: If you can find where it says anything close to, "This is a review for the Lord of the Rings films" anywhere on the books, then I'll eat my shorts.

So you avoid it. Im just saying its no ones place to say:

"It's shitty journalism, irresponsible, and apathetic on their part."

Because SOMEONE out there obviously does not mind it. That would be like saying (stretch here) you dont like seafood so no one else should be able to eat it.

Again IF they did not say "Spoilers ahead" then you have reason to be a little upset but then you would have (others not "you" in general) stopped reading after the 1st sign of spoilers.

As for the pictures, a picture is worth a 1000 words and there is no spoilers in those pictures unless you know MORE about the plot/story already.

Note my diction. I said "book" and "game"... Not review.

It is shitty journalism and irresponsible on their part. They're redifining what a review is for whatever reasons they may have. But, like I said, not much can be done, or is being done, about it at the moment.

It depends on the effect it has on the customer base. If they continue to do it and people decide not to pick it up they will have to "change" their ways.

But if people continue to support and buy that type of "journalism" there is not much that can be done.

I will assume you wont be buying their magazine... ;)

Yeah, it's market savvy. I just don't like it though. As long as it doesn't become a wide-spread problem my head won't implode or nothin'. I have my favorite resources for researching in advance anyway.

You know who the best reviewers are besides yourself? Your friends and consumer reports (reports on the internet). Consumer reviews are more prone to containing spoilers, but the trade-off is they tend to be more accurate. For example, every mag praised Rome: Total War to the heavans, but consumers reported it was riddled with so many bugs and incomplete features (it was rushed out the door). It's all about going to the right places.

What kind of spoilers were they?

- Story
- An event in the game
- Level
- Monster/enemy
- Weapon

?

Well...the spoilers...
Me - i have been spoiler free all the time, i didnt read ONE spolier tag, havent seen ONE spoiling picture, etc...
I have the mag, ive read the review - the only part containing spoilers (i skipped that part)
was the background on help from Xen and one picture where Alyx stands with G-man
which i blame myself for seeing...
Theres no need to talk of mags incompetence and such stuff...since the review and pics are pretty much at the same spoiler level as all of the others...
