I don't believe this has been discussed before, since I used the Search button and came up with no such topic.
So, what I want to know is, will Half-Life 2 have a save-anywhere feature, or a checkpoint-based save system?

Its supposed to be just like HL1's save system from what I remember. Autosaving, quick saving... etc...

You're insulting HL by saying that it will have a checkpoint system. :x

But D3 would have actually been better with a checkpoint system than with a save-anywhere feature.

i hope there is quicksaving enabled..
but a: ONLY 10-saves per autosave area would be cool too...

They could vary that with the difficutly level. Normal and Hard would be unlimited saves and than super hard would be hard with limited saves per autosave area.

Ummm...on the 23rd of October I will be. But I am already Mature.
Why do you ask?

Yes id like that but what i would also want would be a profile system -

Instead of having only one list with all your saves on it you could have different profiles with different lists - Mainly because i dont want my dumb siblings going into my game and screwing it up and it autosaving and NOOOO my life is over and that sort of thing. If not ill just have to keep hl2 a big secret and theyll never know its on my computer! HAHAHAHHAHA!!!!!!!!!1111oneoneonenumberafterzeronumberafterzeronumberafterzero :p

haha, just a question your avatar would have asked :LOL:

@topic
HL2 will have the same ----->Quicksave(qs)->turn a corner->qs->turn a corner->qs->turn a corner->qs->turn a corner, fall of ledge->qs......no no! i mean ql-> ETC!

yeah
10 saves for easy
4 for normal
1 for hard
0 for nightmare
perhaps with a feature so you cant have multible saves for an area?

Sorry, but im almost ceartin your all wrong!
On the developers video Gabe says that there wil also be a good autosave system! So you can play without qs/ql and dont get frustrated! And thats what i intend to do!

maybe the good system is the one suggested in this thread? dont get so worked up :D

I actually like what this thread has come up with. With a limited amount of saves, you can save alot but you will also have to be somewhat strategic when you save. And not save after every guy you kill. In halflife 1 i think i QSed and QLed so much that i went through the whole game with 100 percent.haha

There's a video interview with Gabe where he talks about the save system. He says that they have designed auto-save very carefully with the aim that gamers can forget about saving and trust in the autosave that if you die you will start from a reasonable place. He said that they wouldn't do stupid things like dropping you in lava right at the end of a hard bit.

Nope you have to go around and collect crystals. Once you have collected 5 you have to find a "station" to deposit the crystals to iniotiate a save. The stations can only be used once for one save and you can only carry 4 crystals. THAT is why there has been a delay.....they cant figure out how to incorporate the 5th crystal slot. So they may in the long run drop the whole crystal idea. We will just have to wait and see.

I hope for no quick saves and no quick loads. I don't want auto-saves either. I want a password system like the one they had for the original Metroid game for the original Nintendo. I loved that you could spend fifteen minutes writing down and rechecking that password only to have the case of one letter incorrect. Then having the joy of going back through the forty characters to find the one that was wrong. Talk about fun.

I would have snapped the game CD in half within an hour if it had used such an atrocious "feature".

Man, you gotta love them battery saves though, I think VALVe should but a battery save on the CD, that way we don't have to clog up our hard drive with all that save game crap, and we can take our games whereever we want to!

Xilema: Welcome to the forums! :D

Bah, I prefere quicksave feature: if you want to save... you save, otherwise... you go trough the game only with checkpoints...
Liberty to do what you want to do !
