Half-Life 2 has been out for a little over two months, and in that time the title has fared well across charts around the globe. Recently though, VU Games posted word on its website revealing that Half-Life 2 has sold nearly 1.7 million copies in less than two months. According to the short blurb, sales have been particularly strong in Germany, the UK, France, Italy, Spain, Scandinavia and the U.S. markets.

Cool. Not sure if it includes Steam sales though.

I dont think 1.7 million includes the Steam purchasers. So it should be more than 1.7 million.

Also, remember that Half-Life sold more copies in the 3rd year then the 1st. I would expect a small increase in sales later on with Half-Life 2 too. 1.7 million is quite a lot for a PC title. How many did Doom 3 sell?

I'm certainly surprised. :) PC games hardly ever sell this amount, especially in such a short amount of time. Unless, of course, the game in question is The Sims. :p

Ha! ID is such a loser :p

Number of sales, doesn't make a game better.

Halo 2 for example sold 4.1 million.

My guess is that it doesn't, because if they don't generate revenue or generate very much revenue from Steam sales, Vivendi wouldn't want to include the figure.

However, on the flip side, saying that it sold well in the UK goes against the rather disappointing chart positions that i've seen... and Steam probably offers the best way of monitoring how many units have been sold...

Either way, 1.7 Million is better than a kick in the teeth. But of course, HL2 deserves to sell 1.7 Billion copies (There probably aren't that many people in MEDCs anyway ^^)

hmm 1.7 million, very good. This game hasent been advertised like halo2 has. word of mouth, or keyboard, is what sells hl2

:)

"GTA: San Andreas notching up one million units in just nine days, making it the fastest selling video game of all time."

GTA:SA :bounce:

Half-Life 2 is quite a different beast entering a different market. Half-Life was a bit of an unknown property at the time of its release, and that third year boost in sales seems to coincide with Half-Life's increased online popularity. Half-Life 2, on the other hand, was one of the most anticipated games in the history of gaming, so I imagine its sales numbers will be frontloaded.

jesus, this thread is like sooooooooooo pathetic, I mean guys, wake up, who gives a **** that HL2 sells 1.7 or 5 or 0.001 copies? Valve should.

I bought the game, thought it was great, period. I'm not like a Valve accountant or something :dork:

GTA, and Halo are already well known. They are still showing commnercials of both of them. HL2 hasnt been advertised AT ALL, and yet it is in the millions mark already.

That is very good

Errrr, its interesting to see how Half-Life 2 has compared in sales to its predecessor and other titles.

There was a Half-Life 2 commercial but only shown on specific channels. It has the Half-Life 2 logo come up and then it said November 16th. I didn't personally see it though.

If valve have a killer mod later on in half life 2's shelf life I expect to see the sales have a bump, just like HL1.

Just goes to show you how blindly people will buy games. EtM was terrible.

i bought the game used for $10 and enjoyed it. It wasnt long enough but it was fun while it lasted. Anyway, EtM was released on several consoles as well as the pc. Halo 2 and GTA:SA are both console games that both got well advertised. So, its not really fair to compare sales of those games to the sales of HL2. Comparing them to farcry or doom 3 is much more reasonable because there all popular PC FPS of 2004. So, anyone know the sales of farcry?

I thought they were 2,5 millions or something. :(

Why won't Valve say the number of steam sales? :f

Many of us didn't just enjoy HL2. I for one think this is the single most back-breaking achievement in terms of design alone ever achieved on any game ever. It annoys me immensely when discussing games offline and everything is "Halo" this, "GTA" that and "Final Fantasy is teh best eva!". HL2 deserves recognition, and that will never come without sales. Hell knows it deserves to be the best selling game in Computer and Video game history, so that everyone can know what the fuss is about.

Quoted for agreement :)

yeah i read about HL1 selling more copies in its third year, which is great...now how many game devs can claim something like this? :)

S'okay, we all know that Half-Life 2 is the greatest game in existance, and Halo 2, Doom 3, and other such games are closer to the other end of the spectrum.

Go HL2! If 1,700,000 is without Steam sales, it's probably closer to 3 million.

Valve will NOT release Steam sales figures as that would give VU easy access to potential evidence in the pending litigation. Eventually, VU will subpoena Valve for that information and we'll find out the exact amount of Steam sales as well as that information will become public information.
