VR-Zone Hardware has just posted some more Half-Life 2 Source Engine benchmarks, this time running through the Source Engine Stress Test with all of today's popular video cards.. including the R350 and R360 cards.

Check out the article, time to buy a new Radeon X800 XT Platinum Edition!

I was going to get a 6800GT because I hoped they'd come out with new drivers, but even with the new drivers the 6800GT still trails the X800 Pro.

Cool, I'm happy that my 6800GT will be ok now, although it did very well on Doom3 so I shouldnt be surprised.

That's not surprising.

Valve said that HL2 will perform better on ATI cards anyway - so no surprises there.

Where is the X800 pro on the results charts? It's supposed to be black, but I see no black line.

my ti 4200 got 62 fps avg, prob cause i ran in dx8 mode or something was turn off

yes that is a suprise, first time vavle said something and it was true. nothing was postpoend nothing was lied about nothing was .... u get the idea.

I can't believe that at the highest settings at the highest resolution with the highest aa and af, the X800XT outperforms the 6800U by bloody 65%! The X800XT runs the game at 70 fps whilst the 6800U runs it on 20? What a huge difference.

Whoa, look at the benches with 4x AA and 8x AF. The 5950 BEATS the 9800 pro by quite a lot!

Yeah I was really suprised by the 5950 Beating the 9800XT and 9800 Pro cards................. Because of the whole "ATI Shader Day event", I wouldn't think NVIDIA's card could beat ATI's old generation.

They would have mentioned if it was running in dx8 mode. Valve really screwed themselves over promoting ATi so heavily.

But why don't they include Nvidia's powerhouse Geforce 6800 Ultra extreme in the benchmarks. I think that one would be on par with the X800 PE. Or am I saying something silly here now?

That's rather shit. 9800's at the bottom. Valve certainly gave thousands of video card buyers good advice.

The reason the Ultra "EXTREME" was not used was because that card isn't out. NVIDIA is lucky to get an ultra "extreme" capable GPU per NV40 wafer, and all that means is that it will be clocked higher than the standard Ultra GPU.

Don't ever expect to go to best buy and buy an ultra extreme.

"One of the controversial topics that arose from this however was that all high-end GeForce FX 5900 series cards run in DirectX 8.1 mode, even though they’re technically DirectX 9 cards."

Taken from Firing Squad's stress test benchmark

Lol holy shit... I didn't even know they started selling those already.
Well honestly who's gonna be buying a $500 card thats overclocked 50MHz more and sold for $1000?

X800Pro compares with the 6800GT
X800XT PE compares with the 6800Ultra

The 6800Ultra Extreme is a product from a few companies, like Gainward and XFX, that take Nvidia's 6800Ultra chips and OC them. It is not a 'Nvidia product'.
If Sapphire OCed ATI's X800XT PE chips and sold it labeled as Extreme, it would be the same thing.

Clock speed doesn't help when the game does so well on the competitions card. The boost would be similar to a good driver update you could say. :) The Extreme is what... Only 25 or 50Mhz higher for core speed? Here is a review that compares Gainward's Extreme product with a X800XT PE and they show how the OCing went as well.

These are not official benchmarks. The stress test is simply a hall of fame for all of Source's most impressive and demanding effects nicely arranged in a row.

I don't know what Valve was thinking. Why couldn't they simply have done a timedemo and saved everybody so much confusion. I wouldn't be suprised if the timedemo's scores are radically different from the stress test.

Yeah true, but it can be assumed that the generally what we see in the stress test will be what generally happens in HL2.

i just bought a 6800 ultra @ 425mhz oc's to 465mhz at best buy :naughty:

I know :/ If these results are to be believed it seems the 5950 is better than the 9800 pro/xt in Doom 3 and HL2.

We'll have to wait for some more benchmarks, it's worth taking anything released at the mo with a pinch of salt.

(if this is true, though, i'll be pissed off)

Those benchies seem suspect, all the otherones i've seen have the gap ALOT closer then that.

I think this article is kinda shotty. A timedemo would be nice, and a little more telling.

This article reaffirms the fact that everyone out there is interested in comparing apples and oranges for these two chipsets.

So the 6800 GT gets 80 fps and the X800 Pro gets 92 fps or something like that. Big deal. That is no difference. Like the article said, for once, both companies have released an excellent product at the same time.

I find both card to be great. My friend on an X800 Pro and me on the 6800 GT playing CS:Source side by side....no difference. Apples and oranges. I also wasn't OC at the time.

The only time I've ever seen a difference is in Doom 3 when his fps would dip a bit from time to time.....certainly nothing to throw a fit about.....I have yet to be slowed down in CS:S and niether has he, but I think that is more of a testament to Valve for developing an engine for the masses. Valve did a great job with Source and anyone with any of these next-gen cards should feel privaleged.

As stated, The ENTIRE FX line runs Half Life 2 in a mixed DX8/DX9 path.
You can't compare the 9500+ line to the FX, because the 9500+ will play the game with the full DX9.0 path and AA.
Also, the ENTIRE FX line won't apply Centroid Sampling (AA).

Wow that a nice overclock. Makes me want to buy one. I would suspect its the BFG card because it comes 25mhz overclocked already. Makes you wonder how well the ultra extremes would overclock. Thats a sweet overclock though. The lowest I have seen an ultra overclock is 445 core.
