Just curious if anyone has heard any rumors concerning TV advertisements for Half Life 2. I'm wondering if they'll do live-action, CGI, or in-game, or a mix of all.

actually i dont even know if they will have tv ads- pc gamers use the net for their info so the tv isnt good for oc games- howver i suggest they do it because its going to be awesome.

its very rare for a pc game to get commercials, the one of the few was diablo 2, but because half life 2 is coming out for xbox, they will probably play one when it comes out then, and then say its also available for pc.

heh, yeah. i really wish PC games got the commercials they deserve instead of annoying ads on the net. anoyone remember the commercials for "the thing"? thats the whole reason i bought the game, cause the commercials looked so fricking awsome. that and i liked the movie and you get the movie for $5 with purchase of the game, but i wouldnt have even know about the game if it wasnt for the commercials. i want more commercials for games.

its not like it needs a commercial tho heh
think about all the pc games sold by word of mouth, ads around game sites and in magazines.

Then by that reasoning, a TV commercial will only increase the sales of a game. After all, you are reaching a bigger market by advertising on television. Bigger advertising market= more people who might buy the game= greater revenues= more money to go toward the development of Half-Life 3

Lets see...

UT2k3, The Thing, GTA VC/3...

any others? I WANT HL2 to have a TV commercial!

If we get good HL2 ads on tv, then it means fewer crappy, annyoing ads from McDonalds, Subway, KFC, well pretty much any fast food place, all their ads suck ass :x

*Edit* Speaking of good game ads, anyone remember the ads for Gran Turismo 3?

i think they only show commercials for pc games that either come out for the consoles first or are coming out for the pc and console at the same time..

Have you seen the EverQuest commercials that try to make the players seem like they have friends in real life?

More people playing halflife 2...hmmm

While i see this as good for the companies i don't see how thats necessarily such a good thing for me, a seasoned fps player.

Whenever you market to the masses you end up marketing to people who should not be allowed to breed due to horrendous amounts of stupidity. Now take a look at online games nowadays, for the most part, servers already have quite the fair share of smacktards, tkers, people who have no brains, people who flame over the chat line, people who cheat, ad infinitum.

Public advertising would bring more of those people in.

Is that what we want?

I totally agree with you Flyingdebris. I'd say roughly 85% of the population that plays video games (mostly sub 30 yrs old) are COMPLETE ****ING IDIOTS when it comes to entertainment and generalyl life... Especially after recent morons ive encountered at my local HS I wish most of them were eradicated from the planet so we could get on with what counts in the future instead of taking a dump on the side of the road cause someone dared you...

I say that with full honesty they are so many idiots out there it's a shame, they are winning theres more idiots than decent, down to earth smart people out there! Atleast the internet makes it a little more challenging where you need some common sense and intelligence to get to anything usefull.

Yes, because then we could kick their asses in a deathmatch and they can go cry.

What about Half Life 2 action figures at McDonalds? Or "Headcrab Chocolate Chip Ice Cream" at Baskin Robins? I say the marketing team should rev things up!

so ... dont you think that they should have an official web site up for OFFICIAL press releases? dont get me wrong i love this site and i will stay with it forever but valve needs to get a site up

sure we would kick their asses 3 ways till tuesday, however i don't play online to suffer fools, i play online to seek a challenge. listening to stupid prepubecent kids who think they know more than those twice their age really tick me off.

I totally forgot about that....yeah, marketing? What marketing (Gabe aside!!!!!!!)? I think there is an absolutely *massive* fan base, but not everyone is a diehard gamer who spends their idle minutes posting on these forums.

They should just buy 20 second spots of the G-man saying "Well, well, isn't this just like... old times" and then it fades to the HL2 logo, and then out. It would build buzz without costing as much as a full-on campaign.

great idea

I would prefer "We've been rather busy in your absence, Mr. Freeman..."

except the only people who would understand that ad would be the people buying HL2 in the first place

There should be a 1 hour show about HL on Tech TV. Like show the 23 minute vid for the first half and show the rest with commentary from Gabe or something. Or maybe Gabe could be the host. Or maybe a Q and A from Gabe with Adam Sessler(who should die) as the host.
Anyone?

No, it would appeal to everyone that played HL... even the ones that know nothing about HL2.

... and you know all of the HL2 fans would get a kick out of it.

BTW: Screw XPlay... put Gabe on the Screen Savers with Leo and Patrick...

would be so cool... If there is going to be a commercial, then it should be the G-man, not any other guy..
Or like: "We've been rather busy in your absence, Mr. Freeman..." *ingame footage with much shots and explosions* and then: "Well, well, isn't this just like... old times?" then the HL2 logo fades in, end of commercial.

I guess that would appeal to more of the public but I think a cryptic, classy commercial like the one Apos described (I thought of a similar one with the quote I mentioned but never said anything about it before) would be more Valve's style.

Besides... people will be intrigued by the commercial and go find the gameplay footage anyway.

RavenShield, Madden, Midnight Club2 all had commercials.

All three of those are either on consoles already or will soon be on them... that is why they have commercials.

exactly

i like apos's idea. mysterious, yet sophisticated... just like all commercials should be.

off topic: i like the apple commercials, like the "pods unite" one, now those are REAL commercials

This thread brings up a good point. Apart from Gaming mags, and websites, i havent seen/heard any marketing. I suppose this is normal, but it just doesn't feel like a game that is going to be as big as HL2 could go without some ads on all ranges of media.

I dont buy pcmags(who needs em when you got the net) and if i was a gamer who didnt really check out gaming sites much, then i would have no idea Half-LIfe2 even existed. A friend of mine who owns halflife and is a big counterstrike fan, only heard about half life2 last week, thanks to me. If there was some ads or something then everyone would know for sure.

most ea sports titles has commercials. I've never seen the VC commerial. Didnt think they allow a game like that to be shown on TV.

That's sort of the point though. People will go: WTH is that? They are used to seeing expressionless anime faces on video game ads: the G-man smirking will, alone, blow them away enough to want to find out more.

Maybe they should put have, after they fade to the HL2 logo, a website address where people can "find out more" for themselves! :)

RavenShield, Madden, Midnight Club2 all had commercials.

true, so did Splinter Cell, GTA 3, GTA vice city, Knights of the Old Republic, and Warcraft 3 (saw the WC3 commercial in a movie theater, actually)

Wow, these commercial ideas sound great.
If say you wanted to make your own commercial for HL2(just for fun) what sort of software would you need/use.
Maybe people can create some and post them in these forums............
It would give me something to do in my spare time till HL2 is released.
