Just a moan here. read it or don't bother, i don't care. I have had enough.

I have a machine that very very easily meets the system requirements and yet the game does not work. Even after literally days spent trawling the forums for a fix. Heaven forbid that it should be valves/steams/sierras/vugames job to help. I mean after all i only legally purchased the game and no doubt swelled their vast coffers of cash, so what do I deserve.

If you have the same 'loading screen' hang up as me then do what i am about to before wasting days and days searching for a fix. Bin this rushed bug ridden game and get on with your life. hell, maybe even go outside.

If you are one of the lucky thoasands that the game works for then good luck to you, and i don't begrudge you anything. Do me a favour though and check box of your game (if you bought it). And look for where it says Dell Pc's will not work, or where it says that Phillips dvd/rw will not work. Surely you can see this is potentially irritating.

Anyway, like i said, I'm giving up. Steam/valve/sierra are a bunch of incompetent arseholes who are definately breaking trading standards laws.

No half life for me then. Unless i illeagally download it ,in which case it will work glitch free according to the hundreds of people i have spoken to that have done just that. Never mind.

You think Valve Etc break the rules?

Have you even heard of EA?

Oh yes I see now, your right. That makes every thing ok doesn't it.

Your probly doing something wrong or your comps messed up, because I got a dell with the Minimum system requirements and my game runs around 70-100 fps all the time.

HL2 works fine on my computer, and my computer is a dell...

I think you just need a chill pill, and some tampons.

Hey. It didnt work for me at first either and I was frustrated, because I waited 6 years for the bugger only to find it I'd have to lower the settings. Don't think your the only one.

Tried reformatting?

I have a dell also, my dvd drive didnt work, but i got the game on steam and sold my retail 1 day old for a profit...worked out nicely :) Tell us your specs as well, and then we can help you perhaps...

I didnt buy the box- I bought over steam. a lot of people have said things about loading screen hang up. When actually if you have low requirements- the loading will take a very very long time which may look like a hang.

Personally I feel having a Dell in the first place IS the problem.

£30 quid, bought for £26 from amazon, that £4 quid when a long way :D The guy i sold it to, is an old friend, he was gonna go buy it that day, so i saved him the trip. Nothing dodgy about it, i never even got to run the dvd, let alone use the cd key.

Is it the retail or did you buy over steam? Because my freind bought it over steam and his would stay stuck on loading screen for a long time. It turned out he only had acquired about 70% of the game, and he was trying to run like that but it would start downloading the rest. Eventaly he left it on there long enough and it went through.

There was another guy on this forum who had a similar problem to your problem. I understand your frustration. Believe me, I'm not one of those people who is going to say "stfu steam roxors you just suck or something lol". Steam and HL2 have worked well for me, so I'm lucky, but that doesn't mean I like it. I digress.

Don't give up yet. It could be something really simple. Tell us everything about your computer so we can try to help you out. What kind of videocard, processor, hard drive, etc etc. Any other problems with various software on the machine? Anything at all helps.

Is this supposed to be some cute little veiled insult? If so, I don't see it. Would you mind explaining what him playing an instrument or writing down his thoughts has anything at all to do with this??? Thanks.

It probably means that in his mind writing thoughts in a journal and playing an acoustic guitar means having a life. He is telling the guy to stop worrying about these things and to get a life. get it?

What you meant to call this thread was:

"Half Life 2 will never work on MY Machine"

If you put that, you would have attracted people who wanted to help you.

Instead, you get a kick in the balls.

Yeah, I think that's the problem actually.

It takes me a while to load up the menu but I just let it load and live with it.

I think that most people just need to learn a bit of patience.

Yes, I do get it now. I was torn between two meanings of what he said. One of which was what you just told me, the other was that he was trying to imply that he was a stereotypical whiny teenager or something, and in order to completely fit the stereotype, he needed a journal and guitar to write crappy poetry/journal entries/songs. Sorry for the confusion.

Thanks for the cerebral replies to my original post.

For the record. I own both a journal and an acoustic guitar though can not figure a way to integrate them into my system. so unsure how they can help. I only wish I was a whiny teenager, and chill pill and tampon response too pathetic even for me to credit it with a response.

And for Matt (thanks for the constructive posts)

I think I have

Dell Dimension
intel pentium 4, 2.66 ghz
512 mb of ram
intel direct X level 9 graphics card
way more than 4.5 GB hard drive
HL-DT-ST RW/DVD GCC-4480B DVD drive

what's your ISP?
yes it is relevant since the game needs an internet connection to work.

Broadband
also use zone alarm pro firewall. no idea if this makes a difference. I assume not since i turned it off and got the same results.

the problem is not that i haven't waited long enough cos i get an error sound and the game exits to windows then does nothing.

At this point, i think that's understood.. lol It's common knowledge by now that dells are crap. Get over it.

Anyways, thats your problem. :D

I can see it now
ESRB Rating: ABD, Anything but dells will run this.

intel dx9 card? never heard of that before :O is it an intel integrated card.. cuz if it is.. then thats your problem

I have a machine that very very easily meets the system requirements and yet the game does not work....
...If you have the same 'loading screen' hang up as me...

The loading screen hangs up and because of this the game won't work...

All I can say is that it takes a while to load.
Right click on your Half-Life 2 icon and append -console in the "Target" textfield. For example: C:\.....\Valve\Steam\Steam.exe -console

I am still not sure I understand your problem. maybe you should be more specific

Intel direct x video card. yeah that's probably an onboard video card...

If you don't have an AGP port in your pc maybe you can get a descent PCI video card

lol, he doesnt even have a video card, and he is whining like it's valve's fault? wow. how rude.

Yea my car's out of gas, i think i'm going to go scream at subaru because it wont run. They should have a label on it saying "Hey dumbass, if you dont have gas, this wont run!" Because i didnt know, its all their fault.

It's your graphics card, i guarantee it. Just spend like 100 bucks and get a Radeon 9200 PCI card or something, it will do the trick.

No Intel card has ever been Direct X9 enabled. Actually, no. Scratch that. No Intel card has ever been capable of running anything, let alone a Direct X9 application. There are only two players in the industry: ATI and Nvidia. If you don't have one of them, your card is almost 100% likely to not be up to the task of running any games released in the last year or possibly two years. With that in mind, does you PC run other "new" games, and if so, how well?

I'd suspect the card is your problem. Also, just to double check (and it's a silly thing, so please don't be insulted by me suggesting it), but check that your Zone Alarm firewall is allowing HL2 to have "access" and "server" privaleges. I'm often to be found swearing at it for freezing up games when one of those alert thingies pops up to tell me that the new game I just got is trying to access the net.

Get a new graphics card, radeon 9200 is fine. Make sure hl2 has full access to the internet

There's your problem right there. I'm not quite sure I understand your first post, but I have a solution for the long loading times on the menu screen. Go to Steam, my games, right click on Half-Life 2, click Properties, click launch options, and type "-console" in the space provided (without the quotes). That should save you quite some time in loading the menu, it will just have the console window pop up.

And don't try to run the game on high settings, your graphics card isn't adequate for high settings.

Run the game on these settings:

800x600 Resolution (Maybe even 640x480?)
Medium-Low details on everything
Simple reflections on water
no AA, no AF
Bilinear filtering
Low shader detail

That should at least be a good starting point for you.

I don't know any command lines to get your game to run in DX7, that would probably help you if you could figure out how to do that.

If it still wont run, then your computer does not meet the requirements because of your Video card. Get a Radeon 9800 pro 128MB for like 200 dollars and everything will be cool.

Some people...There is obviously something wrong with your machine, so stop bugging us, and just ask politely for our help, instead of putting down Vivendi or Valve.

You should also try putting this in the launch options "+map backround_none" that way it doesn't have to load that backround map. That saves me a lot of load time right there. I'm not sure if that is even a real command, but it sure works for me.

BAH! Not another misinformed sheep telling an even less informed buyer to purchase an outclassed, overpriced, ex-gen card! If you are going to buy a card in the $200 range it's the 6600 GT. Not only do some manufacturers sell it with a free copy of Doom 3, but it's usually LESS than the 9800 Pro (go to tomshardware.com if you don't believe me) according to every review I have read. It TROUNCES the poor little ATI biatch in pretty much every next-gen game. And, as mentioned, is usually less expensive, often by far and has some really great freebies.

Just a minute to laugh at the person moaning at valve for having an onboard graphics card.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahahahahahahahaahahahahahahahaha

*takes a breath

whahahahahahahahahahahahahha

hahahahahahahaha

*goes to have a cigarette...

*looks at the onboard post again
