Half life 2 zombies

I have just started playing Half Life and Half Life 2, and it is probalby the best game I have ever played. But how come, there are only 3 types of zombie? Only once, in Half Life, do you see a headcrab jump on someones head. Then he just falls over. What happens when a headcrab jumps on someone? How come when you die by a headcrab, you dont change into one?
Ok I'm done.

I'm not sure if this is a complaint or not. :) 3 types of zombie to 3 types of headcrab makes sense, and is better than the constant uniformity of HL1 (though Opposing Force addressed it by having Marine / Barney zombies as well as that Gnome thing. Yes the). HL2 Episodes add an extra zombie as well: the Zombine (a combine zombie, though that is problematic since it makes you wonder how they got through the helmets. And why you haven't seen any of the buggers before :p).

Headcrabs appear to be parasitic. They basically take their host's bodies over. It's how they gather food etc. The process appears to take some time, as we have encountered living people struggling with headcrabs on their head (e.g. HL2 Route Kanal) or still alive whilst it eats away at them (HL1 Unforeseen Consequences). Whether a headcrabed human actually "dies" is another matter. The standard zombies and the combine zombies in particular appear to retain some of the speech traits (Zombies appear to shout and scream when on fire, Zombines splutter out combine callsigns and phrases). Sadly, it seems that it's impossible to save someone who has been headcrabbed, as they die when you remove the headcrab. Not that the game has allowed us to do this with surgical precision mind you. A Glock round to the head may not be the safest way of ensuring survival :p

Of course, the entire concept is very similar to that seen in the Alien films, with the exception that the host isn't used as a surrogate "mother" for the headcrab's offspring, but as a kind of disposable body that they can possess to perform basic functions necessary for survival.
How come when you die by a headcrab, you dont change into one?
I foresee... this thread... turning into a... Helmet discussion thread :p

Basically, the HEV suit Gordon wears has a Helmet (see the dead HEV people on Xen / the HEV Helmet model in HL Deathmatch). Trouble is, for all publicity shots we see Gordon rather stupidly not wearing a helmet because, well, it makes him look sexier or something. Also, the HEV suit pickup in both games includes no visible Helmet (so perhaps it is contained in the suit). It makes most sense that Gordon IS wearing a helmet though, since he has magic numbers floating in front of his eyes, headcrabs don't suck his brains out, and his underwater oxygen supply works.

i think you dont become a zombie cause they kill you before they "headcrab you", so, thats why... forget the helmet stuff... if you were a normal human (not gordon freeman) you couldnt avoid a headcrab that easy, heh, thats why you rather die than let the headcrab owns yo

Also, the zoom function. That alone for me is proof that gordon is wearing a helmet.

dude, forget about the helmet stuff.... there is a helmet topic out there.. this is about zombies... ¬¬ its not more interesting but.. oh well

I think that the zombies have to hit you because they will only jump on someone's head when they know they don't need to worry about the person trying to pull them off or anything... like in half life 1, that scientist was outnumbered greatly.. and alone.. the headcrabs could easily overwhelm him. but for you or your rebel allies (half life 2) they have to get you down to a state of health where you are nearly dead..

The headcrabs use the bodies of the victims for food (by 'sucking' the live matter out of them) as well as to 'travel' for greater distances. And as a zombie, the headcrab has much a greater chance of 'catching' more food than jumping on someone's head.

...this reminds me of the facehugger in the Alien games. Though if one jumps on your face you're certainly dead, making them much more dangerous than the HL headcrabs.

Headcrabs were like a tribute to facehuggers anyway.

And the most annoying thing is when you manage to kill the zombie, but the damn headcrab just detaches from it's head and starts leaping on you...a good old shotgun or python round in the head, should take care of both.
