Okay, I'm gonna take a chance and hope that this doesn't sound nerdier than it is.
Here goes

Alot of games(starcraft), movies(Star Wars), TV shows(Star Trek;enough star stuff already) and comic books(Marvel) have a "universe" and they have books based on the universe. Does anyone else want to see some Half-Life books? Like super-sized fan fiction, but offically sanctioned from valve. Cause I was just reading the zombie post and I think it would be cool if you could see things like that happen in books. Where it would give background to the universe and explain alot of things.

Whoa...that even seems nerdy to me when I re-read it. Oh well

I really do like the idea of fan fiction, and I would probably read books on it. In fact, my ideal geeky fantasy would be that Marc Laidlaw write a book set in the Half-Life universe between releasing Half-Life 2 and working on Half-Life 3 :) That'd be schweet.

that's an awsome idea, there are halo books what the **** is stopping us from having hl2 books published?

I would never buy a book inspirered by a game, exept maybe HL. :D

And if a thin game like Halo can have a book, then I cannot see how HL cant

what about a game that was inspired by a book that wasnt published before the game came out??

I'd like to see a HL Guide. Basicly the story not written as a story...just like paragraphs on the different events. It would also have a page dedicated to all the creatures and weapons etc. Has anyone seen those pull-out cross-section books? liek one of those...

Yea this would be cool, ive recently been posting on the Egosoft forum for X2 and learned that books for this game have been published and will be on sale soon, as this game is incredibly immersive it is easy to write about.

Games workshop also do this and there isn't even a storyline per say for this, where as half life has a huge starting block of material for authors to work from.

Fingers crossed

Even that would make me happy. Something that explains what is going on...like if anyone has ever read the last three pages of the Deus Ex Guide titled "what's really going on". Something to explain the game in a narative(sp?)

I read at PHL that there will be 3 books releasing sometime after the HL2 releases.

Novels would be very cool, though I don't think that they should be about Gordon... not unless the writer was really good, anyway...

Another cool thing would be Half Life 1/2 Visual Dictionaries and Incredible Cross-Sections books, like they did for StarWars...

yeah if M laidlaw wrote a book on hl or hl2 i'd totally buy it. He could really add a lot to the existing storyline and really flesh things out

Barney's the only playable character that we've actually heard speak, so for the sake of staying in the character of the universe, I think a book from his point of view would be cool...

That'd be cool,
A story about Xen and its politics/inhabitant/... would be Awesome!!!

Books would be awesome, as long as they dont ruin the whole "you are the character" thing, i wouldnt like gordon to talk, like brain damage said, barneys point of view would be a good idea, i owuld definatly read stuf realted to half-life

I've eMailed Gabe Newell and asked. My general method of dealing with questions like these...

Ok, tell us when he answers,,,

Anyways, wouln't it be better to mail Marc Laidlaw directly?

If im not mistaken, the HalfLife plot was written by a Published Sci-Fi author?

Maybe worth hunting out some of his written work?

It was written by Marc LaidLaw without a doubt. Some of his work's include, 'Dad's Nuke', 'The 37th Mondala', and 'The Orchid Eater'. Eccentric pieces of work (didn't actually read the books, but their reviews). I'm expecting HL2 to step up a notch in the storyline department. One thing, I think I read somewhere that HL1's plot was inspired by a book by Stephen King, about the military doing secret experiments. Maybe I got that wrong.

Oh, and you can't email Mr. LaidLaw, he has a profile on the Valve site, but there is no email, well its not available to the general public anyway.

Pretty sure the Matrix was at least partially based on the Ghost In The Machine Aminie/Books

The Half-Life story was inspired by 'The Mist' a novella length story by Stephen King.

I agree's compleatly with that.

Laidlaw rocks!

Make us some books!

I would just hope they really go well with the story and dont get all stupid like some of those kinda things.

I'm actually working on a "mod" for hl2 that I want to go really really well with the story, so......I'm kinda stuck right now because I need to know what happens in hl2 to make everything work.
But it will rock your socks off.

I would like to see a novel based on the Half Life Universe. I see it this way

Book to Movie conversions have been more successful than Game to Movie conversions, due to the fact that in novels, you can create a character more emotionally, gives them more personality, and a wider background and reference.

If there was to be a movie based in the Half Life universe, it should be written as a novel first. Plus book sales would hit the roof.

I would also like to see some sort of book that contains letters, memos, and e-mails from certain people in and out the facility. These could include journals from famous people from around the world as they are watching events unfold on the news or something. It could also include documents and satellite images of the BMRF used by the military to co-ordinate strikes.

If you are prepared to pay a bit more, you could buy a DVD, which includes live footage from Sky News and CNN as they are tracking the events, and statements from leaders from around the world, it would be like mind-blowing.

That would be cool. They could call it something like, "When the Combine came". Or something like that.

Yeah books would be awesome, I got two books based in the Halo(X-Box) universe, they rock, HL ones would own too.

Quite a few games have been inspired by "The Mist".

I bet you never thought Silent Hill and Half-Life were indirectly related ;)

Hmmm...One of the first things I did after creating this post was e-mail Gabe....he usally gets back to people within hours...still no word and it's 5 days later....if it was an easy answer I guess he would have gotten back to me by now.... oh well
I'll just wait and see

or maybe i stumbled onto something that they didn't want us to know about
*goes and checks out the black van in front of house*

Well, he hasn't answered the two eMails I sent him recently... maybe he's really busy...

mortiz, I guess The Mist involves people trying to ressurrect 'god' etc then :p

Becuase other than that I don't think Silent Hill used The Mist as basis.

The devs of Silent Hill just added the mist in the game to make it alot scarier.

Can anyone here reccomend any of marc laidlaw's work?

Id definately read anything published ( with a subject of halflife)

I read the 37th mandala, it was interesting but had a poor ending, and the book contained sex scenes, makes you wonder about alex and gorden in a Halflife novel!

Actually, his novel 'Dad's Nuke' seemed to get alot better reviews. It was his first book I think.
