Half-Life: Full-Life Consequences as animated by me

Vegeta, you are damn good at pixel art.

I am dabbling in pixel art right now, trying to make sprites for a game I've programmed, but everything I make seems to be made of fail and ugliness. ;(

I also make a few 2-d games at home, and I like to do most of the sprites myself. As such, I'm pretty used to pixel art. I'm still not very good at drawing proper lighting on them or perspective, but I've made quite a few pictures of various machines/vehicles. What kind of sprites do you need exactly?

Well I've been coding a space shooter recentley, and I've made most of the smaller enemies (which are about 30X30 pixels) and tried making one of the bosses (which is about 80X80 pixels). The method I've been using is drawing things at a very high resolution and then scaling them down.

Here's some examples:
enemyType2.png

this is supposed to be an interceptor, and it fires little green projectiles from its "eye"
Boss2.PNG

this is one of the bosses, it fires laser beams from the little cyan spikes on the front.

You see, everything I make looks really cartoonish and stylized and I was looking for something more gritty and realistic.

If you're trying for something realistic then you probably need some kind of 3D software, because drawing light on things realisticly is very difficult. It's possible with smaller sprites and/or cartoonish sprites, or if you're very skilled, but I doubt I could do something like you're after ATM. Frankly, those sprites of yours are a fair bit better than most of mine. I do have a 3D editor at home, which I've used for sprites in the past, but I can't install it ATM because I've lost the box with the product key on it. If I find it any time I'll tell you, because it does the job pretty well, even though it's pretty basic. Scaling the images down usually makes them look a bit better, because you can't spot the various crapnesses on them.

EDIT: That doesn't mean you're screwed, of course. There are plenty of great sprites available for free on the internets. Try here, the Gamemaker home page; look under resources, there are a few space/war style sprites you could use. If that's not enough, Google is your best friend.

Have you ever played Tyrian, theotherguy? I've always admired the graphics in that game. Is that the kind of look you would like?

Yes. Tyrian has the sort of look I am going for.

I might try to make 3d renders and turn them into sprites.

Oh wow, Tyrian is such an awesome game--Tyrian 2000 was fantastic.

I love isotown btw, good show, good show indeed.

(And I haven't cried in years, best to bring back the tears by watching p.1 and 2--believe it or not, this was my firzt tyme. :)).

And I find myself working on Part 3.

25% done, won't finish tonight of course, hopefully will keep working on it.

I had an exclusive first look. I rock! :smoking:

40% done... Putting in a lot of work to make this one the best.

Its an enlarging smile face, not a penis.

Absolutely fantastic work Vegeta! Hilarious! Thank you for that gift. (Makes bearing the pain of not being able to play HL2-EP2/OrangeBox a little easier)

*Eagerly awaiting part III.

Yeah, when are you going to make the last part?
It's been like five months.

I started working on it a lot like 2 weeks ago, but got busy with other things. Now I'm even more busy, but I'll try to find more time.

I'm about 40 percent done if I recall correctly.

Hey Vegeta, I caught this screencap the other day, thought you might get a kick out of it:

laaawwwll, awesome.

/me opens part 3 to work some more on it

Hahaha, best laugh i've had in a while...

*bumps thread*

:E

It's depressing not having sound here. It takes all the fun out of watching them.

I laughed so hard, that I couldn't breath.

TRUE STORY.

PS: BECAUSE YOU ARE HEADCRAB ZOMBIE

Ahhh this is so awesome.

Ryan North from Qwantz.com (the guy who linked to isotown twice) randomly emailed me asking for links to the first two animations. Then he said when I finish the third one he'd love to share the trilogy with qwantz readers. 0_0

My god, can you say coolest dude ever. This would be the third time he's linked to something of mine in front of a massive amount of people.

I'm very motivated to finish part 3 now, obviously.

Your Isotown mirror for Part 2 didn't work for me. Just to let you know.

Lol'd very hard when watching that again :D

8*s from me :)

Could i have the pages to the other parts please?

Just found out about this :D

OH SWISH.

This is probably one of the main reasons I joined this community!
Great ending.
