i'm not sure, but i think i get motion sickness when playing half-life. i don't know though because i don't think i've ever had motion sickness before but every time i play (single player), i don't feel so great afterwards. it's weird because I play a ton of FPS games (classic doom, counter-strike, painkiller, farcry, wolf:et, call of duty, halo...) and i never feel like that after playing anything else.

just wondering if anyone else knows what i'm talking about or am i just cracked?

Well...in every game manual they warn about motion sickness. I'm not sure why it would only happen with single player and not other things. Mabie you should try a different resolution??

Edited your thread title a little, the original was bound to have some people think you meant something else :p

Well good for you HL2 is just around the corner ;)

Probably to do with the momentum HL movement gives you. Here's a tip: never play the Specialists. :p

It was weird, I use to get motion sickness everytime I played the original Hitman.

No other FPS's, just Hitman.....

If anyone laughs I'll kill them, but Half-Life used to make my mum motion sick. She visited at one point (and being the dilligent son I was I just had to complete the level I was on first- I'm such a jerk) and commented that she found it incredibly disorientating, and she was just looking at it. Bizzarely, she doesn't have a problem with any FPS any more; but I'm not sure what else would have made her motion sick in the past anyway.

The mystery of the motion...

Cool! Your mom plays them too or just watches?

one of my friends almost threw up from motion sickness from watching me play rise of the triad

It's not so bad when you actually control the action. What makes me mad are "second hand players" Who glare over your shoulder and tell you "wait you missed something. Go back. Left. No the other left." There was a pennyarcadetoon but I CBA to link it..

I get motion sickness every so often playing some video games, including Half-Life. And sometimes I can play those same games for hours and feel perfectly fine... Someone needs to do a study on this or something.

No kidding, man..

I hate that so much.

My mum doesn't really "play" games, she just "tries them out". But for all I know, my apparently "computer illiterate" mother fires up my old AMD 600 whenever I'm not in her house...

My dad's a pinball fanatic, and so he started out with the many basic pinball games on PC. He then upgraded himself to "graphical appreciator", whereupon he never plays anything but just decides that they look good. He thought HL2 looked "impressive"- high praise indeed from a senior lecturer on mental health.

Anyway, I also hate "backseat" gamers. That's why more games should have internet and/or split-screen co-op- so they can do their own thing (and so you can splatter the gits brains when FF's on). It's wierd though, I know plenty of people who do but I've never experienced motion sickness with any game, ever since "Mysterious Labyrinth" on an old tape-based XB (and no, not "X-Box". OMG ITS GONE FULL CIRCLE!!)

I dont know about motion sickness as I havent ever had it.
but since I bought my radeon 9800 pro, and have been playing in high resolutions like 1280x1024... my eyes (well more noticeable lately... I just write it off as some kinda allergy that I have never had before) feel dry, and irritable, and its hard to focus sometimes... then again I wont touch my comp for a couple days and still feel the same.

I tried playing in lower resolutions... but Im spoiled... once you have had high res.. theres no going back. (same thing with AF and AA cranked)

that's weird, I use a 9700pro for 1280x1024 too, never had a problem, managed to go non-stop thru Max Payne 2 & Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow without any sorts of problems.

Its quite common for spectators to get motion sickness because they have to follow the movements of the player. Since they dont know what is going to happen next the human brain predicts what it thinks will happen. If it does not happen it can become very disorientating. True that.

But I dont understand why the player gets motion sickness.... I'll have a ponder on that one.

you probably just have allergies. it's the exact time of year when that happens... happens to me too.

glad i'm not alone on this sickness thing. i just hope to god HL2 doesn't do that to me. i doubt it will... since HL is the only game that ever has made me feel sick. HL2 is so much different I doubt i'll have that problem.

whoever mentioned rise of the triad... heh... that game is awesome, i used to play it all the time.

I actually did get motion sickness from HL.. needless to say I was often feeling disoriented. The only other game it has ever happened with was Decent. *shrug*

sorry I wrote that this morning at 5:am before heading to gym
I should have specified.

My monitor sucks goat balls, and has a max refresh of 60hz at 1280x1024.. and I think thats why it was, see I never played in anything above 800x600 before my Raddy ;)... however I do think its just allergies.. irritating as hell though.....
since I been playing video games since I was 5 years old (C64), and FPS is my all time fave Genre. (never experienced any irritation or dizzyness/motion sickness)

oh, and R.O.T.T. (rise of the triad) kicked all kinds of major ass.. I still have it backed up on cd somewheres...
