Hi Everyone, I'm new here.

I was wondering if half-Life Source is totally remaked using The Source engine? From graphics, lighting, shadow, ragdoll, water, etc.

Nope. HL: Source is a more quick makeover.

Probably reutilizing the new sound effects(After all they are somewhat the same). Maybe also some new models.

Textures might also be taken from HL2. But other than that it's more of a conversion than a rework.

Its just a direct port to the Source engine. Updated water, physics etc. Nothing special.

Yeah i think they said they we'rent going to bother with updated materials. I think their comment was 'it can be modded in' lol.

Actually it says in a new interview on Homelan: http://www.homelanfed.com/index.php?id=26901

Doug Lombardi - In terms of graphics, Half-Life: Source is the most straightforward of the Source porting work done thus far. These ports began as tests to see what MOD authors would experience if they attempted to bring their HL1 MODs forward to Source. HL: Source was the first test, and proved quite informative. But unlike CS: Source, which included new art and audio throughout, folks here had pretty firm opinions about not changing the content in HL1.

Details were released in a game magazine review of HL2.

I think many people don't know about the details though, and I posted it on the HL:S forum but I don't think many people saw it there either.

HL:Source has:
- Almost all original textures (maybe a dozen or less new/updated)
- All original level geometry
- New water effects
- Some new lighting effects
- Source physics engine, however with original geometry there aren't likely to be many situations where it is terribly evident
- All of the high-definition models from the Blue Shift pack.
- Nothing specific is known about the sound effects, but probably again re-using Blue-Shift/OpFor/Original sounds with little or none coming from HL2

In other words, it's kind of a waste of time. I mean, it doesn't even have HL2 models or sounds or textures (I'm sure they could use some of them), let alone any actual level changes.

The same review also said that Valve had been approached by several mod teams about doing a full make-over for HL and that it seemed likely such a project would go ahead some time in the future.

Not enough that they don't create new models, but we also have to live with the HD pack crappy Barneys.

Updating the textures would be a pain, but dropping new models in would be quite easy I think.

It is a MASSIVE job though. A good year or more work for a couple of people.

We're already working on it :) Here

Guys over at mapcore have already recreated say 40 textures:

MapCore Textures

I'm working on a design document, so not to ruin the game in any way.

Still need a lot of team members :) *nudge nudge*

As an aside, I read this in the interview posted by Fisker_Q

Doug Lombardi - We've met with folks in Hollywood to discuss the idea of an HL movie. But around the time we hear, "And then Gordon falls in love..." we usually head back to Seattle screaming.

ROFL!

I wonder Will Hl1 Source remake all model and alien? I hope HL1 source pretty cool as HL2

Those mapcore textures aren't especially impressive. If they'd built them as objects, lit them, baked the lighting and generated normal maps, then I'd be impressed.

Also, you'd be looking at replacing quite a lot of areas in HL that are given detail with textures with actual brushwork/static props.

Pi Mu Rho - Check the Help Wanted thread for my mod, got alot of feedback from Dark Elf about model baking and such, plan has changed a fair bit :)

It's a mix of both. It wasn't worth redoing everything in the game, but some things have been redone. Monsters & NPCs are all ragdoll enabled, physics "works", water is the nice pretty water of Source, bullet hit fx, metal has specularity (glossy and reflective), etc. To TOTALLY remake HL1 would have both ruined it (it wasn't designed for the engine) and meant a lot of time and effort would have had to be put into it. Physics is there when it can or needs to be. Like remember that place where all those boxes are hanging from cables, and you have to hop box to box? Well now...

Is it worth it? Yea, it is. I was one of the people who worked on it (the maps) and I totally enjoyed playing through it again and again in the port. It's still a fantastic story and game, now it's just even better.
