im trying to use hl source materials for a map im making, but they show up as a purple/black checkered pattern....

is there any reason that the materials themselves are a problem, or am i probly just doing something wrong?
 
Make sure you're using the correct game configuration for the game you're making maps for. You won't be able to use Half-Life textures for Counter-Strike and vise-versa.
 
You'll also have to copy the texture into the materials folder for whichever game you're mapping for.

You'll need This to get the textures from the gcf.
 
make sure your not using 'model' textures. You can tell from looking at the file name. All the model textures will show as model/props_****/***** when you browse them.
Avoid these.

The model textures wouldn't come out as purple and black patterns though, they just look screwy in-game.

The purple and black pattern normally comes up when the texture's aren't where they're supposed to be.
