Ive passed HL1 at least 15 times, and i must have a really screwed up copy or something, because ppl got way more out of the story than i did

Story of Halflife as i saw it:
Your a dude called Gordon freeman working in a secret facility, the "administrator" orders experiments with a "sample". U do the experiment and the sh!t hits the fan. U try and escape killing aliens, and government forces(trying to contain the incident)
you learn that one of the aliens is holding the portal open so you go and ruin its sh!t, and then gman gives you a job.........

WHO THE HELL IS ELI VANCE?
the scientist we supposedly "know" from HL1, all i knew was a bunch of cloned security guards and scientists..
all the conspiracies i read about who the administrator is - i must of missed some extra information in HL1, cos i remember him being mentioned ONCE and in no detail
And the second alien race.... I played through opposing force 3 times and i just remember a bunch of new aliens.... never knew they were a different race - Maybe all this information was in manuals, interviews etc. But as for the games themselves, they never go into the depth of story that HL2 appears to be continuing

Did i miss something from the games? Is there conversations/information i just missed?

I'll direct you to my mate's website:

http://website.lineone.net/~wingerden/

This website has a nice timeline of events that happened in Black Mesa, as well as some nice speculation and information (with a little of his own imagination to fill the gaps up). I suggest you read it. It's outdated in one or two places, so there's zero Half-Life 2 info in there.

yeh ive read that page b4, and its a VERY good and detailed overview of what happened, its just that i didnt see most of that information IN the ACTUAL game, throughout the singleplayer levels

Well, in the timeline, almost ALL of the information was gained from the Half-Life SP campaign, as well as the expansion packs etc. It's just that a lot of the information isn't directly fed to you, and it's easy to miss things.

The problem is that alot of HL fans have convinced themselves that the story is alot deeper than it really is. Don't get me wrong, the story was interesting enough to keep me playing, but it really isn't that great. The way it's told is pretty cool though.

its not the story, its the way its told. half-life's story told nothing new, but it told the same story better then anyone else did.

'though it does feel like Half-life has more of a story 'now' then it did when it was released.... weird eh?

For the love of God, stop linking to that POS site... half of it is just speculation and fairy tales.

But the timeline is almost 100% from the video games, besides a few little insignificant details that act as filler. I had already said not all of it was true, and some of it was just speculation and imagination on his part. It really helps people understand what happened as a whole.

Also, try calming down. I was only trying to help the guy.

Eli is one of the first scientists you meet right after the cascade. he sends you up to the surface to find some help, just like he says in the e32004 videos.

They never actually call him Eli in the game, do they? I thought it was just assumed that was Eli, because he's black?

That scientist never had a name in the original Half-Life, Valve just decided it would be nifty if it was the same scientist.

So, just because we saw 1 comparison screenshot we immediately assumed it was him?

No, in the E3 2004 presentation, Eli tells you "last time I saw you, I send you up to the surface after the resonance cascade. I didn't think it would take you so long to get back to me" or something similar. The scientist is just never called Eli in the original Half-Life.

Half Life itself does not tell much of that storyline - go through and read it and I think you'll see that most of it doesn't happen in Half Life or isn't explained in Half Life.

Most of the details come from Opposing Force and Decay, and some come from Blue Shift.

These expansions were all directed by Valve and the stories they told can therefore be considered canon in the HL universe (unlike Hellfire for Diablo).
