Chapter 1: The beginning of the end?
The sun was shining and the calls of animals could be heard in the distance. But for the residents of city 17 it may as well have been a downpour, smoke was billowing up from endless amounts of burning buildings and the foul stench of death filled the nostrils of what was left of the population. The animals too were no longer signs of nature but a terrifying warning never to leave city 17.
It had been twenty years since the combine first invaded. twenty long years in which hope was destroyed by the war machine, the combine, in the past twenty years much had changed. The people of Earth were no longer free and had been enslaved by the combine, however not many people cared, they just walked around like zombies, they say it was something in the water, it made you forget. The planet itself was changing, or rather it was dying. Since the combine arrived the seas depths had grown shallower, the combine used it to terraform the planet for their people. The flora and fauna of the planet had changed drastically as well, all known species of pre-invasion animals were extinct. The creatures from Xen had adapted perfectly for their new surroundings. Instead of seeing the mostly green countryside, it was now multi-coloured with plants unknown to Earth.
Not all was doom and gloom though, a relatively small band of people who chose to fight had been living in hiding for the whole time...Until now.
The resistence was now open and gaining support from the population as quickly as they could. Mainly ex-slaves or citizens who looked for a better way of life. Theres was now an open fight between the two factions and anyone caught in the middle was trampled.
