No clue what your problem is though, I have Vista and HL worked right as I installed it nothing changed. I suspect pirated version.

If you have the CD key, activate it through steam; steam has the most latest version which is compatible with Vista

pirated HL games have a tendency to not work.

I thought that was just Source based Valve games, I think this person wants to play the 1998 Gldsource version

Anyway, go to www.steampowered.com, and download the client for 'Steam'. Install this and create a new account. If you have an old version of Half-life with a CD Key, you'll need to click 'register a product I own'. Steam will then download Half-life for you and install it, you'll need to load the game from your 'my games' list once downloaded.
