Half-Life2 and 3Dc??

i did, back when i first got this pc a while ago couldnt find anything then
*shrugs*
should i be worried its now using the pro drivers? since only the clock speed is changed it should be ok right?

could my gforce ti 4600 pro use 3Dc??? ARGH!! i bet it can't:(

I would much rather see sm3.0.

The truth is sm3 is the future,And ATI just wasnt quick enuf on the draw.
They thought NV wouldnt implement sm3 until the next gen,But they did and it could be a big hit.

didnt at one time Valve say they wouldnt optimise for any card.and sence 3Dc is ATI specific it would be kinda unfair.

And no if they did sm3 it wouldnt be unfair, because the truth is the next gen ATI cards will use it,and im sure if ati could go back they would add it too.

But if they do sm3 i guess 3Dc would be nice for the ATI users too because then both will get performance use,but only sm3 will get visual update :| .

The 9800 XL is clocked between a 9800 and a 9800 Pro.

So the XL is faster than an SE? Wait, the SE's are slower than a regular version right, so the Radeon 9800SE is slower than the 9800?

By the way, they'd have to implement 3Dc because ATI and Valve rely on each other. X800's are the choice card of HL2.

Yes, the 9800 SE is below the 9800. The 9800 SE performs about the same level as a 9600 Pro. The 9800 XL (not XT) performs between the 9800 and the 9800 Pro. I can't give you a more specific idea since the 9800 XL was not benchmarked a whole bunch. ATI drivers should work perfectly fine for the 9800 XL, except it will try to read the 9800 XL as a 9800 Pro.

3Dc is being implemented in a lot of games because of its benefits and how easy it is to implement it. Compressing normal maps opens up more bandwith in graphics cards which either allows the game to run faster or allow for more detailed normal maps. Implementing 3Dc is very easy to do. Even Far Cry is planning on implementing 3Dc in patch 1.3.

3Dc was developed as an open standard. That means Nvidia can adopt 3Dc without paying royaltys to ATI. I really hope Nvidia adopts 3Dc as normal map compression is a much needed feature in video games. Especially considering how popular normal maps are.

As for SM 3.0 being the future, that is yet to be seen. Currently, we have 1.5 generations worth of cards that are SM 2.0 and only the 6800 series from Nvidia that are SM 3.0 compliant. If I was a game developer, I would spend more time right now developing for games based on the SM 2.0 than SM 3.0. SM 3.0 doesn't provide many new shader effects, it merely provides a more efficent way of doing shaders.
