What I did to fix it was to force the game to 32 bit mode.
Open Steam
Select My Games Tab
Highlight HL2
Right click and select properties
Click Set Launch Options button
In the Box enter -32bit
Click OK

See if that fixes your problem.

it worked thanks mate
but i donot understand why i bought a 64-bit system
and why there is a 64-bit half-life 2
why it didn't worked on my 64-bit pc?????????

Lol glad you are working.

You bought a 64 bit system because thats all they make?
You bought a 64 bit OS because you have a 64 bit system.

HL did work fine in 64 bit. I think it was the first or second game to support it (Far cry did also). But it is hard keeping everything working when you have 2 development trees. I think what happened is some of the files were changed to support a newer game. After steam updated, you (well I) got a version mismatch error (serverbrowser.dll) in 64 bit mode.
