Half Life 2: Esoteric
‘Bide your time’ – it was all he ever said to himself. Life was harsh. City17 was his life. Idanho looked beneath the antigrav lift that was carrying him down. Hundreds upon thousands of them. Them? Humans. What he is. What he was. ‘I’m not one of them anymore. Not one of them’. He looked at his subordinate, Tane, the metallic glow from his mask intensifying the unforgiving frostiness that always radiated from the Combines. They were so cold. He looked down again. There must be millions of them. Families torn apart. Daughters raped. Wives raped. Sons, husbands and fathers now slaves – or dead. ‘Bide your time’. 'Bide your time'. It was a dark secret he shouldn't be expected to keep. It was an operation that had to succeed. All of humanity depended on it. ‘Bide your time’.
Just below the lift were Kul and Jason. They had assembled, as had everyone else, for this huge gathering that had been called at the Citadel. A meeting this large had only happened once before and that was before Kul was born. And that had been when the world of humanity as they had known it had changed forever. Hidden amongst the bodies, they held hands. They were in love. They had been since they were kids. They both thought it incredibly lucky that they had been able to stick together throughout the incursion by these aliens. Kul, brown eyed, average height and gorgeously good looking. Jason was well built, had blue eyes, was rather tall and extremely handsome. They were a perfect match. Kul glanced up at Jason and gave a sigh of relief. It was all she wanted in life. Him.
Kul looked at the impending lift carrying the two Combines. She knew one was the citadel commander; a man known for his usually silent and impassive nature. His subordinate, however, was a different story. A white, hard mask completely covered his face. He was a leader of the Combine Elite – a specially trained and highly efficient killing group. Merciless was a word which would understate his unfeeling character. Kul had encountered Tane just days earlier. She had been in the holographic complex playing Counter-Strike with Jason. It was a passionate sport for both of them – a rich and entertaining game that was played by the majority of the City17’s population. She was good at the game by anyone’s standard. Almost as good as Jason in fact, but he did after all have an almost 15 year head start. Jason had played the game when it had first been introduced – a revamped version of an obsolete game hauled from the past. It had been brought alive through the holographic technology systems offered by the Citadel. Tane had entered their holodeck. He saw Kul and promptly bee hived for her. ‘Come’ was the only word he had offered. Kul knew what she had escaped from on that day. The stories of Tane and his immoral pleasures were whispered throughout City17. Whispered, because nobody wanted to stain the memory of the young innonence who once lived. Whispered, because nobody wanted to risk the consequences that spoken words surely bring. Jason had intervened. He stood himself between Tane and Kul. What followed was anticipated. Tane removed his weapon and pointed it at Jason’s head. Kul could see the gloved finger stretching back to pull the trigger. It was strange that the enemy should have saved his life - a crackled voice had suddenly sounded out over a radio. It was unintelligible, but whatever it was, it clearly agitated the Combine. Without a word he turned and left the complex. Now, again, the monster was just a short distance away from them. Her heart chilled with thoughts of what she had almost lost.
‘Something must have happened’, Kul whispered into Jason’s ear. ‘Maybe the project failed’.
‘It can’t have failed. They’ve spent the last two years working it. All of the other Citadels are depending on this. They wouldn’t risk it.’, was the reply. He squeezed her hand. By god was she beautiful. He was so lucky.
The antigrav lift had finished it’s descent. Idanho stepped onto the stage that overlooked the crowd of amassed people. He opened his mouth to speak but was interrupted by Tane. Something had grabbed the attention of his subordinate. Idanho saw Tane lift his weapon. Only a single bullet emerged.
Kul gasped. The gun held by Tane was pointed directly at Jason. Her world froze. An instant later, the gun flash blinded her vision. She stood there breathing heavily. She heard the sound of the bullet enter flesh and explode. She stood there breathing heavily.
