Does anyone know if HL2 has many if any of those annoying doors they had in HL1?

If you don't know what I mean I'll tell you, Right now!

Annoying doors, For me anyway, In HL1 were when you got to a locked door and had to run 10 miles around the long way just to open it from the other side (by this point you didnt need the door opened). I cant begin to count how many of these doors I came across.

Well from what i can believe this was taken from a review (NO SPOILERS IT'S OKAY!)

and i quote "Even locked doors - often a source of frusteration in a game - are neatly explained by the fact that the Combine has installed repressive security measuers in the city. This game has thought of everything."

What i find annoying are doors that are locked and need a key to be unlocked. Then you must find the ****ing key to open the door. That's what i call boring. I'm pretty sure hl2 won't have any of those. I hope.

Thats cool, thanks.

I also remember reading somewhere that we might be able to blow up some doors, I dont remeber where I read this.

lol this is fps single-player ingredient #1. It is literally NO different than having to unlock the door with a switch, if you put it in the same location as the key. Except in game with limited inventory, then you must drop stuff if you have too much to make room for the key. fun!

I don't mind unlocking doors, I just hate it when they have a million and half doors that will never unlock, or open. Ever. Just to mess with you.

ah back to wolfenstien3d game tactics... find a blue key before going through the blue door.....ect.

Half-life did it right because the puzzles were fun. Other games which all you have to do is find a key to unlock a door, is boring. For me at least.

What I hated in the original Half-Life was the fact that the barney's and the scientists would often refuse to walk through some doorways. You would either have to push them through, or end up walking all the way back because the door closed. Walk through the damn door!!

Ladders were a different story. This is true with every game out there, but why is it that no one can climb a ladder other than you?

The worse thing is finding the door, and then realizing you need the key. Then going back, finding the key, and not being able to get back to the door!

Ahh I loved Wolfenstein 3D. It gave me extreme headaches though.

Now that I think of it, Wolfenstein 3d was nothing more than a maze of boxes; 4 enemies types and no more than 4-5 weapon choices. I could have really used a map in that game. You needed to keep a mental log of where you have been, or else it became frustrating.

What ticks me off is the fact that.......

A FARKING GRENADE/SATCHEL WON'T BLOW A FARKING WOODEN DOOR UP!!!!

i think what he means, is if you have to do like 50puzzels to get ot the same point that is like 2foot away.

Thing is, it probably will..thats what happens. Co-incidentally...seeeming as Source is "like the real world", you could simply break down the door....with something like an exploision of a barrel or somethig..... ah well, if only!!

Man that is so true. It would be so much more frightening/fun if the enemy chased you properly. Usually they just shoot at you, and IF they actually decide to chase you then they'll just stop at the ladder.

I've been watching the bots in CSS though, and iirc they dont chase you. They'll either go their own way or wait for you to pop your head round the corner. I dont think this will be the same for the enemies in Hl2 though.

I agree with you totally when it comes to the doors in HL1 (and most other FPS by the way).

Sarcrasm starts-
we are armed to out teeth...we talk guns, multiple guns...
...grenade launchers, trip mines, hand grenades - you name it...hey, even alien weaponry...we shoot down armoured helicopters...BUT we cannot open/blow up an office door...we talk wooden/plastic lab door with glas opening...obviously it is impossible to blow up.
Sarcasm ends.

Seriously, it is okay if we talk about reinforced metal doors in a concrete building. Otherwise, it is mostly poor level design imho.

So I hope that HL2 will be one of the first FPS games to have better level design.

That was fun having to go around to open it. :) Makes the game longer.

No, there won't be doors in HL2. In the year that HL2 takes place in, doors have become obsolete. Yet some groups, mainly the combine, still like doors, and in horrible acts of terrorism, they place doors, everywhere, the resistance fights this.

Ah yes, the glorious day when the wicked doors are no longer with us, how I long for that day!

Well in hl2 when it comes out all u have to do is hit f10 in the game and u get a special key that unlocks any door! :imu:

How does the f10 button differ from the f10-AltGr combo? Will you get different keys?

well its most likely that the wooden doors can be blown up/destroyed and all the metal/concrete doors need keys if you cant blow em up.I could be wrong though.

speaking of wierd, you start out HL in a subway car thing, and you end in a subway car at the end... until you jump into the hordes of aliens.. then you die.. HL2 is actually the afterlife, or just a whole dream...

Ye wont have this problem in HL2 , the NPC's will follow you where ever u go if u want them to and if they r needed, but they will say no if they fear for there lives or others around them, they wnt go if they think they r going to get hurt

Or maybe, the Combine have special doors that are uber-strong.

UBER-STRONG.

Yes, nowdays it is, but not when it was the first time you ever experienced a 3D game, Period! Thank god, however for evolution and innovation - we've come a long way.

Can you point me to what Valve said?
They said that everything reacts as it would in real-life..
Wood breakes and metal sounds like metal ect ect..

i think it was in the 2003 source BINK no?

Ok i'll try to find it.

..or can someone else confirm this?

Locked doors are for the most part entirely unrealistic, because you have a shit load of heavy weaponry! Locked door? Pshaw! Not when I have a rocket launcher!

Not EVERYTHING, then it would be a simulation of real life - no fun
