I'm looking for a little help on our mod. This is really open to all positions, we need programmers, level designers, 3d artists, texture artists... We need everyone! This is for our Flight Combat FPS (Descent) port to Half-Life 2, which is currently in the planning stages.

You can fill out an application here:
http://roster.midnightsquadron.com/home/msds-apply.php

Thanks =)

whats the mod about who do you have working on it etc etc

As stated above, its a port from Descent1 to HL2 - right now I'm still teambuilding and compiling resources for those team members not familiar with Descent.

hmmmmm descent.. oldschool archady.... floaty robots...

i'm a good mechanical drawer if you need any concept art. if you want some samples, just tell me a couple you'd like to see and i'll draw them up.

as a kid thats all i did all day every day: draw robots. i was pretty damn obsessed.

As stated above, its a port from Descent1 to HL2

that seems like quite an ignorant reply. i dont know what decent is. you didnt link to a website that says. the ideal thing to do would have been to explain exactly what decent is what its about etc. and what positions you have already filled.

Take me home to the lawsuit city, where the grass is green and the lawyers are pretty - OH WON'T YOU PLEASE TAKE ME HOOOME!

Avoid referencing Descent, unless you've got evidence that you've got permission from the guys who made Descent.

I was trying to avoid referencing Descent - but there just isn't anything else out there quite like it. And, I don't need permission to make a mod/port.

For those unaware of what Descent was - it was a FPS, where you were in a ship as opposed to being on foot, and you could move in any direction, up, down, left right, at an angle, and you flew through "mines" (not like, land-mine, but like, ore mines) shooting robots that were infected with a virus. At the end of the level you would blow the reactor and exit the mine before it really blew up.

I've got a lot more detail available for team members on our forums. I really don't want to discuss the indepths of the mod yet. Essentially the Goal of the mod is to recreate the first Descent game using the Half-Life2 engine. This makes it simple(as simple as it can get, that is) because there is no guessing on what needs to be done.

I have filled only a couple spots in 2d Textures, and an AI programmer thusfar, so we still need quite a few people. Rambler, we do still need concept artists, and most everything in the game is mechanical in nature.

Now, I could have easily filled these positions from within the Descent Community, but I believe we need a fresh take from people who haven't been cult-fans of the game for years, who haven't already made up their minds on "how things should be or look".

I hope this answers all your questions. :)

Sadly, theres nobody left to get permission from, even if I did need it. I've gotten permission to use the Descent material before, years ago - and that still applies to this, as I'm not making any money from it (the stipulation they put forth at the time).

THQ own the rights, as far as I know. You'll need permission from them, otherwise you run the risk of getting shut down every time you make a media release/news posting/downloadable.

-Angry Lawyer

I'm not going to get into a legal debate with you. If you want to sign up to be team lawyer then do so, otherwise shut the hell up because our permissions aren't any of your business.

Rambler, try a new Class 1 Drone concept (original image can be found Here)

Email it to me [email protected] and fill out an application at the link in my first post.

oooh this thread is gona burn!!

shut the hell up because our permissions aren't any of your business.

thats not neecercery. im to tired to say anymore. whats the point in doubleposting for no reason??

Certainly are good with your public relations, hmm?

You post here, it becomes our business. You'll get in trouble by calling your game Descent. You'll be safe if you simply make your game inspired by it. End of legal story.

-Angry Lawyer

if you cant handle critisism then dont create a mod thank you. there will always be people who isn't fond of your ideas and you have to learn to ignore them instead of acting childish

Guys just STFU! Hes making a mod and it sounds awesome. Its his problem if he gets shut down and he obviously knows the risks and other things.

Stop telling him about IP and ooooh "THQ still has the rights oooh!"

If your gonna help, help dont be a pain in the arse.

i'm not so sure about your attitude. how old are you? are you actually serious about making a mod or is it just an idea?

i don't think you're potraying an image of someone i'd want to work with. maybe i'm wrong. maybe you're having a bad day.

I've been involved with the Descent Community nearly since its inception. I was a Beta Tester for Descent Online (a version of D1). I know exactly who holds the rights (its Volition Inc, btw, who are now owned by THQ, but Interplay won't let go of the Publishing Rights). Volition and remaining members of the original Dev Team, have not to this day expressed a desire to force people to discontinue any Descent Mod, unless said person is trying to make money from it. If they had, the would have already shut down the Descent mod in progress for the Doom3 Engine, and the Omega Wing (Half-Life1) mod. The developers have never been anything but supportive of the community and its efforts (The Descent1 and Descent2 source codes have been released for public use even). If I had any reason to believe they would find cause to find conflict or if they at any time wish for me to cease I would simply change the name of the project and objects. Its that simple.

I don't mean to come off brash, some people just rub me the wrong way.

For those who want to know, I'm 27. I founded the Midnight Squadron in Descent Online Beta just over 10 years ago. We have 170+ members and hundreds of alumni, and we are the oldest online gaming team of our kind in existance. MSDS was a natural extension of the MS. And Descent, being the game we were founded in, now with no further development and no planned further development, the time for a mod seemed appropriate since we can't legally make and distribute an actual stand-alone game. This isn't just an idea, I fully intend to see it through to the end.

And for the record, I made no reference to the mod being named "Descent", I simply said it was a Flight-Combat FPS port. Its not officially named yet, and I wouldn't try to pass it off as just "Descent" ;)

And the doublepost was an accident. :p

Now, any more questions?

yeah, what kind of positions are you looking for? what styles of artists etc..

Just the one. If you want me (or anyone) to stop bitching, you're going to have to display correspondance saying you're in the right from the IP holders.

-Angry Lawyer

Rambler - I'm looking for all positions - Map Textures, environmental effects, weapons effects, 3d artists... etc.. This will have a "industrial" feel to it.

Okay, since everyone is threadcrapping on my thread, can I get it closed/deleted? I'll start a new one.

can i just ask though, what are your skills? it seems like you need everyone. are you just a guy who's trying to recruit everyone to make a mod. because the best mods usually come from a core group of a few talented friends, and maybe some outside influence. take a look at CS. that was made by two guys. and yes, for those of you that didn't know CS was a mod.

Look, if you are wondering if MSDS is "good enough" for you to join, or if your attitude is that you're better than everyone else, or anything like that - I'd just assume not have you on our team. That kind of personality is disruptive to the team environment, and I won't have that.

I'm not some noob who just dropped off the back of the wagon. My modding experince goes back to Wolf3d. My current place on the team is Website & Administrative, I lead the team and make sure they have the resources to communicate and share data, and provide creative input. I don't claim to be a programmer, or a modeller, or a texture artist (altho I do have some graphical talent, its mostly stuff for websites that I do) or a level designer.

If you are having doubts about joining, then don't. I don't want any of my team members to be iffy about it. If I can't rely on you - I don't need you. You'd just be a detriment to team productivity.

I came here with a friendly post looking to recruite a few talented people, and all I have gotten is the 3rd degree, threadcrapped and someone even submitted a nasty application (The form saves your IP, btw, moron - thats a nice router you got, how long do you think it will take me to break your password? Hmmm? I sure hope its not set to the default). Not that I'd ever do such a thing. I'm nicer than that, but just demonstrating, I could.

I don't know why I even bothered coming here, if this is how everyone here treats people, then maybe I don't want any of you people on my team. Cya.

just ignore them, they did EXACTLY the same thing to me.

tell us more about your mod and what your hoping to achieve with it.

this is is how people here treat people who act as you did.i dont know who psoted a nasty application but they didnt do anything illegal. hacking there system and destroying it is illegal, supposing you actualy can do that. cant have been me i have a crap router.

I'd just assume not have you on our team.

i cant make any sence of that sentance.

I'm not some noob who just dropped off the back of the wagon.

you say that but infact you then contradict that by figuratively saying that you dont actualy have any skills.

I came here with a friendly post looking to recruite a few talented people

your posts have been far from friendly

and all I have gotten is the 3rd degree

people had a problem with the fact that you dont have legal rights to make the mod. so your your illegally making a mod and trying to recruit people to help you. instead of explaining that you infact dont have rights and could offer no insurance that the mod wont get shut down you acted maliciously and avoided the question.

administrative skills? sooo.... that's unskilled then?

and you really do need legal rights. i'd hate to do alot of work only to have it taken away when you get sued and all the patents go to the origional makers of... descent, was it?

amen brotha! amen...

a man

some men

a men

....uh, yeah....

Look, people, I didn't say this was going to be called descent. Sure, it may have been implied, but doing and implying are two very different things. Unless I intend to release it as an official "Descent" I don't need permission to create everything from scratch. Every piece of content that is originally created cannot be touched. If it were otherwise, alot of people other than me who have created models of the robots and ships in the past and made descent mods for other games or even 2d versions of the game, would be in a lot more trouble right now. You have no idea what you are talking about. And I didn't say I haven't tried to contact them yet, when in fact, I have tried to contact them. But that isn't any of your business, its my business. Its not for you to worry about. Its for me to worry about. I will take care of any legal concerns we may have - again, its not your job to know these things, and if I don't answer or avoid the question, its because you don't need to know. My posting here does not make it your business or give you permission to stick your nose into MY business.

I didn't say I was unskilled. I told you what my current duties are. My skills are none of your concern. I don't have to validate my skills or leadership to you or anyone. This hasn't been an issue for anyone else on the team, or anyone who has been on the team in the past. If you aren't comfortable with that, then don't join up. Its that simple.

My posts have been less than friendly because the reception has been less than friendly - I'm a no bullshit kind of guy - you treat me with courtesy and respect and I'll do the same for you. If you're an ass to me, well then right back at you. Again, if you aren't comfortable with that, you know how to not post right?

Unless I intend to release it as an official "Descent" I don't need permission to create everything from scratch.

wrong

You have no idea what you are talking about.

wrong

My posting here does not make it your business or give you permission to stick your nose into MY business.

wrong. everybody here has the right to say what they like and many other people it seems share the same opinion of you, your attitude and public relations.

you treat me with courtesy and respect and I'll do the same for you. If you're an ass to me, well then right back at you

this may be but you are infact posting on these forums asking for help. and i am a member of the forums replying.

you treat me with courtesy and respect and I'll do the same for you. If you're an ass to me, well then right back at you

again im not the one asking for help here you are. so why are you beeing rude ignorent and malicious.

I don't have to validate my skills or leadership to you or anyone.

again you are the one who wants to start a mod team. so you really do need to validate your skills and leadership. if you dont have any skills then atleast say your willing to learn. dont just avoid it by beeing malicious. anyway i could go on but i dont think there would be much variation in my replies to everything you said. why dont you apologise and start again.

whatever, I've got enough to deal with without going back and forth with a bunch of 12 year olds - I don't have time for this, I'm out of here. Could an Admin just delete this thread please?

This thread makes me angry. Very angry.

There seems to be a huge misunderstanding with mod developers lately.

-Mod developers request help, not demand help.

-Mod developers who are assholes to others don't get help.

-As such, when a mod developer requests help, their business automatically becomes the community's business. Saying "none of your business" automatically implies that you are ignorant and a bad communicator and unwilling and/or too lazy to share ideas with others.

-Mod developers who ask for help are automatically under the gun of the community. If they hand you shit, you it eat. That simple. Otherwise, you can just go home.

-"My posts have been less than friendly because the reception has been less than friendly - I'm a no bullshit kind of guy - you treat me with courtesy and respect and I'll do the same for you." No sir, your less-than-informative original post and ignorance to provide substantial replies invited flames. Again, a "no bullshit kind of guy" generally doesn't do to well with a mod community, because guess what 90% of the community will give you in the early stages of development? Bullshit. That's what.

Now for the constructive part of my constructive critisism. What should you do?

A) Go to a different forum, assuming you didn't piss off the others.

B) Hide away for 6 months and hope everyone forgot about you. Then come back and try again.

C) Admit to your mistakes and appologize.

If this were me, I would probably choose C. Though, you already dug yourself into a pretty deep hole. Good luck.
