At home, i have one computer only. However both my brother and I use it at different times. If i install hl2 on it, but both my brother and I want to play our own single player game, will this be possible? In some games you have different profiles, and your save games are each stored apropriatly. Will this be the case in HL2, or will his save games and mine be all mingled up together. If he plays it after me and quicksaves it will copy over my quicksave wont it? It seems like its going to be a real mess when something as simple as the system flashpoint has, where each profiles save games, options, and key configs are stored independantly, could be implimented. Or is this valves way of making me buy a copy for every person who plays it?

Just use the simple Save/Load. This is sort of a non-question...no data is going to overwrite anyone's as long as you don't rely on quicksaves. You can definitely quicksave while YOU are playing and then really save it as your own file when it's his turn. Then he can load up his seperate savegame and blahblahbah.

they will get mixed up because you are using the same steam profile and saves are stored in the steam directory, if you want seprate saves then install it on 2 diffrent profiles (yes you will have to get 2 copies)

If you buy two copies (as you should, but I don't blame you for not) Steam will create two different user folders with seperate saves. Otherwise, what Kamran said.

GOD DAMN YOU! :p

In case no one understands what I'm saying:

1) Your turn to play:

* You can quicksave all you want.
* When you're done, save it. It will save as "Area - Time" or maybe they will let you name it.

2) His turn

* Loads HIS savegame, his seperate area and time.
* He can quicksave now because you saved all your stuff in your own savegame.
* When he's done he will save it again overwriting his old one.

Unless HL2 only let's you have one savegame, but I doubt it.

CZ had profiles, i'm sure they'll do the same with HL2.

actually, someone asked this very question in the "email valve" thread. gabe's (at least i think it was gabe,) reply was that profile switching was not currently in the game, but they would look into it after release.

i'd quote the email, but that thread is intimidating.

1. Will Hl2 support "Profiles" for different users?
(something akin to FarCry, or BF1942/Bf:V). I often have friends/family over who play on my computer and we all like different control/sensitivity settings.

*** No we don't support this, however you may see something like this
enabled via Steam in the future.

Unreal. So let me get this straight, "technically speaking" I'll have to buy a copy for each person in my home that wants to play this game? Then I "HAVE" to install Steam even if I only play singleplayer? Then I "NEED" a net connection to connect to the steam server for validation before I can even play?

If this is true, WHAT A BUNCH OF F@CK!NG BULLSH!T!!!

Single player doesn't need online verification.. at least it won't in the future.

But yeah, you buy your copy for your own use, other people that want to play should legally buy their own copies, not that I'd expect anyone to actually buy 3 copies so that his friends can play, just don't push it in regards to what valve does to help you in that situation.

You always had to buy one copy per user. There was just no way of regulating this before now (and there still isn't if you stay logged in to one account).
If you don't want to use Steam or play online, buy the singleplayer edition. It most likely uses a cut back version of Steam, and won't need an connection like DvS said.

And if you don't like either of those...tough. That's how it's happening.

Obviously you didn't read my two posts :upstare:

i sure hope we can name our savegames. a mapname means noting to me.

I always thought that if you just made two different profiles on Steam it would save in different places, might take up more space but...oh well i guess i was wrong...

You never need one copy per user for any piece of software not even windows. You need one copy of a piece of software for each COMPUTER its loaded onto, no matter how many people are using it.

You know you can just name the save file differently and you dont need 2 diff profiles....

i think the real battle isn't going to be the save files, it's gonna be who gets to play first: you or your brother? :E
