I like the idea of MC having a past which he feels nostalgic about...

Heh, if Bungie pulls this off well I might even become a Halo fan.

Twas Brillig, and the slithy toves did gyre and gimble in the wabe.

Uh, I thought it was good anyhow. I reckon the girl is Cortana. Or Samus. Or Gordon Freeman from the future.

All mimsy were the borogoves,
And the mome raths outgrabe.

Shuweet. When he was running forward, with all those explosions going off, and the bullets screaming past, as he un-hooked his weapon from his back... yeah, thats when my hype-metre left the charts.

Please don't disapoint. :(

remember my annoying phase of not being able to choose between the wii and the 360? well it's back.

If you look at kupoartist's post I think you'll see that he does ;)

Welsh? Or is it some other bastardization of the English language :P

On topic: I guarantee that that girl is one of the female Spartan-II's that manages to survive the Covenant attack on Reach. It can't be Cortana, as she's an AI. Cortana is basically a carbon copy of Dr. Halsey's brain, but even considering that possibility, Halsey is a good two decades older than the Spartans, if I recall correctly. And it can't be some random childhood friend, because John was taken around age six, and those kids look closer to eight or nine. They wear almost identical clothing. And a fellow childhood Spartan is a much better story element than "random friend #81".

Theres been some speculation that this is a bit of a jab by Bungie and Peter Jackson at the movie studios who are wary of following their plans for a Halo movie, as well as a hype-builder for Halo 3.

And I have to say they did a hell of a job, I would really love to see a Halo movie of that caliber.

very cinematic, i love the opening with the kids. anyone care to take a guess at what the green shooting star is above them in the opening few seconds?

The Covenant attack on Reach happened during the later years of the Spartan training. Like... when there were 20/30 of them left out of the 200 or something that started.

If you ask me, that was when they were, like you said, around 8 or 9 and was probably during their childhood training. Plus, they are talking about life beyond humans/Earth and, If I recall correctly from the books, the Covenant attacks start quite later on through their training*, so it would make sense that they know nothing of a real alien life out there, thus the conversation.

*Someone might want to correct me on that, as I have a fleeting suspiscion that the attacks started before the children were picked, and thats the reason they were trained. I'm a little hazy on the Fall of Reach.

What happened was, the Covenant and Humans made contact about 20 years before the Spartan-II project was underway. Spartans were chosen as children at approximately age six, and they were flash-cloned and implanted with duplicate memories - these clones were left with the family (and the flash-cloning process leading to massive organ problems after about ten years), and the originals are taken off to Reach for training. Then, about 15 years later, the Covenant find Reach, and glass it, but not before John is evacuated via the Pillar of Autumn, and three to six other Spartans (can't remember the exact number) manage to survive Reach's glassing.

I'm just assuming that the little girl is one of the surviving female Spartans, since the conversation seems to be somewhat of a plot element.

[edit] So yeah, you're right in assuming that the Covenant attacks started before the Spartan IIs were born, but I don't think the UNSC educated the civilian population about the war, so the Spartans probably had no idea what they were training for.

This is excactly what I was thinking, who wouldnt want to see a halo movie after watching this?!

what do you mean by that? course it does, it's the same universe with the same characters, anyway i don't remember seeing that rifle in halo 2, or that grenade thing.

NON BELIEVER!!!

How? How does that trailer look anything like Halo 2, apart from the obvious and mandatory like the actual character and the vehicle?

Stigmata; Yeah, I know all that, I just couldn't remember if the Covenant attacked before the training programe or after it. Cheers anyhow.

Thing is, though, is that the female(s) that survived on Reach (Kelly and someone? I forgot that book, too) after they were sent down must've been about 30 at the least, whereas the female in the video sounds very young. From what the book tells us, though, Dr. Halsley takes one of the females with her for unknown reasons so who knows on that front...

Dr. Hasley takes Kelly away. Linda is the other female.

And humans didn't come into contact with the Covenant until about a decade or so after the SPARTAN II program began. John, Kelly, and Sam were the first humans to ever see them.

The new Halo book, Ghosts of Onyx, actually covers the surviving Spartans and USMC soldiers rather than Master Chief this time around. Can't wait to pick it up.

That was interesting, to say the least.

I'm going to re-read the series, just to double check all of this :P

Anyhow, the Spartan IIs, at the young age as seen in the trailer, would not have known about the Covenant in any capacity, and since the Covenant are the only sentient alien life-forms Humans know of, it would make perfect sense for John and Kelly/Linda to wonder if there really is anyone out there.

Again, I hold that that scene is a flashback due to John's shellshock in the present-day.

Hey! I just thought, maybe that battle takes place on Reach?

According to the Fall of Reach, John was on a spacestation/ship thing recovering that data after he sent the rest of the Spartans down to Reach to assist the marines and groundforces. John does to go Reach in First Strike, but I don't recall any combat, let alone against Brutes or with any type of communication with, what I presume to be from the radio in the trailer, marines.

Thats what I was getting at. :P They don't know about the Covenant, and they are aimlessly and innocently wondering about other life-forms, oblivious to the bloodthirsty, war-hungry fleet of the Covenant.

I watched that trailer, and thought it was amazing. I thought they might imbue Halo 3 with the story and character Halo 2 so desperately lacked, and Master Chief might involve into a genuinely interesting character. There was certainly great promise in the trailer.

The next day I go to school to tell my friends, who are all big Halo fans (I am the only HL player). I come up to them and say, "Hey, did you see the new Halo 3 trailer? Looked pretty sweet, no?"

The 3 guys present, who I have known for years as intelligent, funny, guys, then lambasted the trailer, stating the beginning was idiotic and nonsensical, and genuinely unsure of why it was there. They said it only got good until the fighting started. I later encountered one of them watching in it our school library on YouTube without sound, stating that he didn't want to hear the dialogue.

I feel slightly ill after that, and am beginning to think the Halo player stereotype is dead accurate.

I love how everyone's faith was "restored" by this trailer.

The trailer was not made by Bungie, and other than handing some concept art over they didn't have much to do with it.

So I really don't see Bungie suddenly exploring Master Chief's past, especially since they've spent two games pretty much ignoring it.

well it's not like bungie had nothing to do with it, it was their story and idea and art etc, but the work was done by an out of house company. which it obviously would have been since bungie is working on the game. seriously. what the hell is the point of your post?

what's the point of your life?

leave my faith in halo 3 alone you evil boy!!

Thats damned true, but ya never know.
Also, The Fall of Reach was created after the first Halo game was made, MS wanted someone to create a kickass story so they went to Eric Nylund and he was like ok cool and thats how the past of Master Cheif was born.

I'm sure it'll be balanced this time around ;)

Also, esplin Bungie always has a huge backstory, and yea they really haven't used that backstory in their games... However, Halo3 looks promising if the trailer is any indication. All of the books and such show that Bungie really is commited to the backstory of Halo.

There is a good reason to have our faith restored :)

I can honestly say i loved that ad, and has rekindled my interest in Halo again.

Hot damn. Shield grenades = X I'm assuming?
Nobody knows. :O

If I recall correctly, Nylund had to write the Fall to fit directly into the Halo story bible, as there's clearly a lot more story going on behind the scenes that may very well never be known to anyone outside of Bungie.

Whether that's actually true is irrelevant, as the events in that story are by-and-large Halo canon.

Not everyone's read the books, but you didn't need to just to know he has a personality, you get quite a bit of it from the scenes in the game: hardcore, determined, loyal, vengeful, relentless, honoring, thats only from the 1st game and the list goes on.
