It's happened to me twice now, and it's really ****ing annoying, loosing days of work.

It happens when first my music player crashes, I get stuttering sound, then when I pause the sound... it gets lowerer and more of a buzz. Then everything locks up.

I reboot.

Reload Hammer.. map is gone. There is no way of saving it, the vmf is wiped, the .vmx is corrupted.. unexpected end of file... even if you text edit it.

run less programs? sounds like one or more programs is responsible for eating up the rest of your ram and then your machine just gives up. make sure and have the sourcesdk menu closed, and the play games menu closed if thats open.

All that was open was Steam, and Hammer, and iTunes.. none were eating too much.

Read something about closing down the SDK-launcher and the "steam play games" things when using Hammer....or else it would crash after a while....

*this was a sticky on the VERC forum....if I don't remember wrong...you could look it up if u want to...

You could try this..(it doesnt solve the problem about lost work...but might help in the future....until valve releases an update)

If I have the SDK launcher open, it kills my entire system after a short amount of time.

If I keep the Source SDK open for too long, my system becomes unresponsive, as well as any other program running (like Firefox) and 'Shut down' in my startmenu is gone. When I close the Source SDK everything becomes normal again.

I was having some issues still I stopped downloading so much porn in the background. Now I'm fine.

Fine being a relative term.

save the map in a diff location and save every time you do something new

I had the same things running, itunes and Hammer. My .VMF file was corrupted like yours. Now that I see we were both running itunes and had the problem, I won't be using itunes while I map :).

I had to start over myself. Now, I save the .VMF I am working on to two locations. One is slightly newer than the other, so if I lose it, I won't lose much.

Timech

yeah gotta agree - always backup
I always close the SDK launcher after loading hammer but thats because i dont need any of the stuff thats on it...

Hammer EATS resources, seriously...So yeah, id say less programs might help. Not sure what iTunes is like but hammer works fine with windows media player.

Happened to me once. I forgot to close it. I never left it open and after that I'm sure not to do it again.
