Well, I'm trying to make a staircase for my Prison remake, and I have a couple of other stairs already made around the map. For some reason I got about 3/4's done with this brush, and carve quit working. I've tried restarting hammer, making another brush to carve with. Dunno what's up, heres a screenshot.

EDIT-I can carve other brushes, just not my staircase.

carve is buggy at best. I wouldnt use it. Instead learn to use the clip too and vertex manipulation. ichi's video tut on the basics can help you.

Then don't carve your staircase. I'm not someone who hates carve, I use it alot. But just about everything you do with it you can do with out it. And anyway, stairs are easy to make without carving.

Don't. Ever. Carve. Ever.

I found my hammer and my comp starts to slow down if I use carve, once when i tried to carve in a stair well Hammer just froze

THen ... don't use it?
Almost everything can be done without using the carve tool, and it's better for your map that you take a few more minutes on some things. Stairs themselves can be done very easily with the special paste (or whatever it's called)

i have never had a problem with carve, i use it all the time...
It's not so much that you will have problems, but your map will be very inefficiant from a rendering perspective. Carve tends to create unneeded faces which makes it harder for older video cards to render. Aside from that, if you want to go back and change something, carved brushes get grouped together, which makes it an annoyance.

Carve isn't quite the devil incarnate that some people will make it out to be, but if you are serious about mapping, you will want to do without it.

the problem with carve is that you end up with lots of floating points that give you errors and such and tend to screw things up in general
