Yesterday, October 22nd 2012, marked one year since Valve launched the Steam Workshop as a community submission tool allowing users to upload new models for verification in Team Fortress 2. A lot has changed in a year and Valve were keen to look back on the major plot points of the service thus far including added support for up to 16 Steam titles, the upload of over 300'000 items, which have been downloaded a total of around 55 million times.

Today, there are 16 shipped titles on the Steam Workshop, with many more currently preparing for launch and in various stages of private testing. There are almost 300,000 items, ranging between models, animations, maps & levels, scenarios, and even full games made in GameMaker Studio. Those items add up to over 55 million downloads.

Valve also highlighted the success and profitability of the Team Fortress 2 and Dota 2 sections of the workshop, which have provided community contributors with millions of dollars after their items are placed on sale in the respective game. At the end of the press release, Valve have provided subtle hints as to the continued future of Steam Workshop, including a new set of features listed as coming "in the near future".

Some content creators in the Steam Workshop are already professional game developers, while many more are just starting out with a promising future in that direction. With that in mind, we have some exciting additions coming to the Steam Workshop in the coming months to better support content creators, modders, and the community in general.

We look forward to seeing what kind of additional features Valve plans to implement and how it will affect Steam and the wider modding world.

Happy Birthday Steam Workshop.
