On topic: I lost my faith in Harry Potter after J.K Rowling pulled the O LUK DUMBLDOR SHUD BE GAI BCUZ I SAYD SO.

Yes. Because she said so. Who is she, other than the creator of the character? That bitch.

Wait, he's a character?
I thought they were all 2D carboard cutout cliche caricatures...

How many threads have you posted this in? That's just spam.

What's wrong with him being gay? What sort of difference does it make at all?

I enjoyed reading them. Neil Gaiman or Terry Pratchett they're not, but hell - I liked reading them, so whatever.

Oh shit, I forgot there's only an either-or choice of liking 2 specific books.

I was mentioning an "acclaimed", "epic", "loved" and whatnot book. Simply as reference.

But then I'd prefer to read Paddington Bear over either of them.

A little Story...

Several years ago, before the first movie was released, I had of course heard about "Harry Potter" but only in passing & so knew nothing about the series or characters by J.K. Rowling. Then when the movie came out, my daughter begged us to take her to see it since a friend of hers had seen it & told her it was great. Neither my wife, nor myself wanted to go see the movie & tried coming up with different excuses to not go. I tried to get her to go with a friend instead for I really did not want to see the movie. Well we ended up taking her & also ended up enjoying it much more than our daughter did.

Now fast forward several years. My wife & I have all the "Harry Potter" movies on DVD, the "Harry Potter Scene it" DVD game & Several copies of each of the books (We did not want to wait for each other to finish reading it). We waiting in line for hours at the bookstore @ midnight to pick up the newest book when each time it was released. No we didn't dress up, though I thought about it. :p

I told my wife about the new book being released & her eyes lit up. So yeah, we will of course we will be buying it as well. Oh & I bought the "Unofficial" book from Muggle.net that was released before the last book was, which basically tried to guess at what was going to happen in the final book.

I just laughed & shook my head at how ignorant some people were when the whole "Harry Potter is Satanic" fuss that some religious zealots raised several years ago. I have a friend at work that will not let his kids read the books or watch the movies because his church said the books were satanic. I like & respect the guy & his beliefs, but I just can't see the logic that some people come up with...

Anyways... To each their own I guess...

The whole satanic thing was just stupid.
But overall, they're just mediocre. I only read one book all the way through, because I'd always get bored because the first 100 pages of each book are always so freaking boring I just can't keep reading.

Yeah in middle school I was the same way. In fact, I teased a kid a bit for reading a kids book. Then the last day of school they showed the film on tv. I was amazed at the CGI but the story was equally as good. Then the second came out and as soon as I got out of the theater, I went across the street to the bookstore and picked up 1-4 on a collection, then book 5 which just came out at that time. I was just so amazed at how much better the books are. When I first read the theory by the guy that ran the site I was like 'ya.....that could be true...".

Then there are these memorable debate's: http://www.mtv.com/overdrive/?id=1563594&vid=159609

I also like his insight to Geraldo on the Dumbledore gay thing: http://www.mugglenet.com/search/index.php The guy wasn't looking for a girlfriend, and he was wearing a "flamboyant purple cloak". I mean HELLO people! :p The books are just about love, and good versus evil. Only with Nazi's, etc. That is the epic part with HP.

Some people have such poor taste... -.-

And my dislike of Harry Potter is not through lack of experience (I've read them all), a bias against the genre, or even against children's books (Diana Wynne Jones >>>> J.K.).
It's simply cliche-ridden poorly written unimaginative pulpy trash with simplistic characters (the 'hero' being an angsty headache), uninspired plot, and next to zero character development.

As riomhaire said, most overrated series since Lord of the Rings. But at least LotR was something of a trailblazer.

Thank you oh so much for your enlightened summarization of everyone's taste in reading material that does match that of your own.

It's not that it doesn't match my own. It's that they think some of the most poorly-written books I've ever read are the height of literature.

I'm agreeing with you here. Apart from the poor taste thing, which I wouldn't have said. Some people prefer to read... simple books. Each to their own and all that.

As an English Literature student, I take pride in the fact that I ask for books with big pictures every Christmas.

to be honest harry potter has never been of much interest to me. I personally thing Harry Potter should have died horrifically in the last one, would have been much more satisfying.
And ?50 roughly is a lot of money for a special edition of a book im likely to never read, nor never want. i wouldn't pay 50p. piece of shit. the movies also suck, generally because there watered down childish versions of everything that happens in the book. if you saw the movies and though "man that was shit" read the book, find out why, and declare both as crap.
