Has anyone preloaded through steam and got HL2 working?

With a the reported problems, is the problem with preloads or retail or both?

Just so we know, then we can make the descision to buy throught steam or retail

there is no problem. 98% run fine....the ones who have the bugs are posting. the other 12398172903812398 are playing the game flawlessly. The people who cant run it have bad installs/bad hardware etc

I've got HL2 working through Steam - on 2 completely different PCs. I don't think it has anything to do with Retail vs Steam though. I'm sure most issues are driver related, possibly hardware.

That said, both PCs I've tried this on have been Intel with Radeon graphics cards.

Thanks for the replys guys, it's that I'm at work at the mo and have to wait till 4pm today to play the game, I've preloaded through steam, but with all the horror stories going around, I wanted to know if it was steam or retail, just in case I would buy the retail version on the way home.

According to people at HL2Fallout, the problem may be related to one of the games in the play games menu having an incomplete download (apparently they are all related, and may share files/resources). THey said to check if any game in the play games menu is at a partial download percentage (to check just right click on the name of the game in the play games meny, and pick properties -- look at the percentage). Apparently if a game is partially DL, it can mess up others, and CS:S or HL:S being part downloaded can really pooch HL2. I am trying this right now to see if it fixes the problems for me.

Wierd...

I have the same problem thou I played HL2 for several hours, then took a pause and then I got the mem-error direktly when I start the game. The intro-valve-thingie plays, then the blurred bg appears and before the "play/option...-buttons" come it crashes with the mem-message.
Whats wierd is that CSS works flawless, just played a few maps to check, no probs at all.
But me wants Gordon ;( ;( :angry:
