Has mainstream pc cooling technology evolved passed noisy ass fans?

Has it?

Any mainstream affordable solutions?

/hasn't looked at the pc hardware market since 1 month before hl2 came out.

MY old pc is too damn noisy.

Err...watercooling does its job pretty well these days, and its not too pricey, just a bit fiddly. Oh and turning it on and praying 'dont leak' is probably one of the hardest things to do.

AcoustiFan have some excellent fans, got a 80mm one for my pc, redefines the word silent :)

You could always try water cooling, little expensive but im sure there are some affordable ones, some cheap pumps are noiser than fans though.

Yeah, one reason I've always stayed away from it.

It's nerve wracking, to think about that.

silenx fans are a dream :D

they are kind of pricey but worth it for the silence

I know some dudes who tried to break a discontinued motherboard from MSI, and they poured water on it and pop, and it still worked.
They ended up throwing it on the ground to break it. They couldn't do it.

Pure water/distilled water doesn't conduct. Just the stuff in unpure water does (minerals etc). Although you still want to clean it up and dry it out.

I'm running a PC with some fairly warm components. Mainly the dual core AMD CPU is always at 100% from folding@home and I have a MSI 8800GTS video card. I don't think the cooler MSI uses is the reference cooler (meaning the default cooler). Plus 3 hard drives. The hard drives are among the quietest currently sold (besides samsung's). The western digital 500 and 750 gb drives are fairly quick too. My PC just has a rear 120mm fan set to medium and a front one set to low. Having the front one set to low keeps noise coming out the front of the case to a minimum. And I have a Corsiar 520 power supply which has a single quiet 120mm fan. I didn't get a power supply that had a lot more watts than I needed so I'm not stuck with one that produces more heat and therefore fan noise. I'd say the PC is almost whisper quiet since it isn't that much louder than the regular noise level of the room.

It just depends on the parts you pick. Avoid noisy GPUs and PSUs. Smart case air flow helps. Don't want a case with side vents cause then your intake air goes right out and your CPU is sitting hot and CPU fan will spin up if set for auto. Same with GPU.

But usually people who want quiet air cooling also get a little higher temps since they slow their fans down or take some out. But thats ok. It isn't me, it's the PC that is a little warm. ;)

Had this problem once myself, (my two case fans and SLI cards are LOUD) but remedied the problem with a simple solution.

Just load up HL2, go to a Combine computer terminal, and think about how noisy the Combine's "high-tech" computer technology is:

*beep* *beep* *beep* *boop* shhhhiiiick whirrrr

and suddenly, you'll realize how quite your computer really is. Worked for me.

In fact, ever since noticing this myself, I've always wished for my computer to sound as loud and cool and the one's the Combine use.

Oh yeah and BTW,

Water cooling is overrated. Loudness ftw! *beep* *beep* *beep* *boop* shhhhiiiick whirrrr

It's not at dangerous as some would believe it to be though. If there's a leak somewhere, the water would just simply drain back into the block. Unless of course there's a puncture in the hose somewhere.

CO2 would be awesome, just gotta keep it pressurized and shit.

I love my air cooling. Hell, I managed to keep a quad-core and two SLIed 8800 GTSs cooled in a crappy case by taking the side and top panels off and balancing a *single* 120mm fan between the PSU and the DVD drive. Now I've got a Mountainmods case, and having eight fans is a wonderful thing. A little fan noise never hurt anyone, especially when the games I play are louder than that.

And I've got something against entrusting my electrical components to water.

One of my friends actually connected a pipe from his air-conditioning system directly into his pc case. It's pretty awesome.

The noisiest item in my computer is my DVD drive. Which hums loudly on occasion. I poke it and it shuts up. I've been considering getting a 120mm blowhole fan.

Don't want to bother with water cooling for the reasons suggested. Although my colleague is seriously talking about oil cooling. I just facepalm inside everytime he talks about hardware. The conversation starts off nice and almost-geeky, talking about cooling, fans, extras in a PC and the like. And then I ask "So what graphics card do you have?" He looks at me incredulously and goes "Um... I dunno. Can't remember". So I drop it. Then we might start talking about power supplies:

I've got 750W in mine

Oh really, what brand?

Um... Corsair...?

Yeah! That could be it...

But I'm going to need more to get my ideal setup.

Oh really? What is that?

Two graphics cards

Oh, crossfire or SLi? Which graphics card?

Um... dunno

And yet again, I facepalm inside.

But yeah, fans are pretty quiet nowadays.

Edit: Damn you Ryan and your shorter thus posted quicker posts!
