Have you heard of the Deep Web and the Hidden Wiki?

Please, everyone be deathly afraid of The Elders of The Internet and their fancy-pants proxying system.

Am I the only one who has the weird thought process that people who operate in such secrecy on such a "deep" web are removed from society? I mean to me in my brain, it almost seems like a whole separate world. You have the real world, with all of its atrocities and stuff... mostly the ones publicized, but then you have this other seedy world full of people and their own atrocities(real or theorized). But it's just so weird for me to think that those people are simply real people who live around all of us.

I dunno... I can't explain it well. Maybe it's just because I've had such a stressful day at work an I'm just fried.

It's like a Cyber Fight Club.

It's more like it's nothing special and it's just full of illegal activity and CP. It's not some den of super-hackers who are gods among men and can do anything they want. It's just a bunch of creeps who don't want to get caught.

Don't really have much desire to go there, kinda like I have no particular desire to browse 4chan. But it is interesting that it exists. As for the child-grabbing thing, pretty sure someone could find that on the normal internet... or figure it out themselves just by bothering to think about it seriously for a few minutes.

I got scared when he said this when he came across a hacker-
"No bull**** here but once he said 'hi' I couldn't reply, my mouse started moving itself towards my files and I froze. Thankfully I managed to regained my composure and took out the battery."

-Can this shit SERIOUSLY happen???

Yep. It's also possible to hijack webcams and turn them on.

And that's why my golden rule is, if the computer starts acting strange I immediately cut power, disconnect the internet cable, reboot and then do a full virus/spyware scan.

I simply don't use webcams.

Oh also, installed a new firewall just for the heck of it, because this scares me.

Not that hackers would find anything useful....

Alternatively, the nice thing about webcams is that you could potentially use it yourself if someone steals your laptop.

Yeah I know what you mean. I kind of picture them living underground, or in a different sphere, or something.

Took out the battery of what? The mouse? That wouldn't do anything. The mouse is controlled via win32 methods that can be executed entirely independently of the mouse being plugged in or not. It just seems implausible to me that somebody who took out a battery from a wireless mouse could prevent a "hacker" from moving the mouse around on the screen. If they shut down the computer that's a different story. I had my computer hijacked in a similar way in the past, back when I was messing with script kiddie shit as a teenager. Downloaded this program to be able to use on people, and it was a trojan that allowed some other people to fool around on my computer and scare me shitless. lol

I think he means he took the battery out of his laptop.

Interesting, but also very creepy. Not touching that with a nine foot pole.

I allways feared something like this existed,so yeah no way I am going into that stuff and now I am much more paranoid than before about internet security

does the goverment even know about this? but seeing news about how they say theyr networks are weak and the constant hacking I wouldnt be surprised they dont know

I would be very surprised if entire departments within the government haven't been set up to monitor the dark web.

brb making japanese horror film

LOL. Definitely the sort of thing that could transpire as a result of visiting the deep web.

As others have said probably not as spooky as people make out, however saying that I'm happy to mainstream the internets.

It's not too hidden. The whole pedophile wiki can be found with a google search. You can also access the site by hitting the "cached" button instead of installing Tor and the .onion BS.

Yeah that sounds really safe, just go on in there unprotected.

You can do it without installing Tor, but that's how you end up in the shit.

That's what SHE said.

"The Deep Web" sounds a lot cooler than it is in reality then, obviously. All I'm hearing up in here is that it's a haven for hackers, child porn and other such unsettling material that can get you, in regard to the law, up poop creek without a propelling device.

That's not cool. :/

That's not a good idea. Like I said, if you ever go on Tor for whatever reason on any site there, use NoScript and disable javascript, flash, media, Microsoft Silverlight, frames, etc.

You can do it without installing Tor, but that's how you end up in the shit.
Indeed. Tor operators and exit nodes get raided all the time.

What exactly were you expecting?

Hell, it even uses it's very own currency system (usually for illegal purchases and trading, of course.)

You can't get to the deep web without a configured browser, don't worry.

Edit: Guess you can, shit. My bad.

Sorry for bumping the thread but it looks like the Obama administration is getting involved: http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/43369742/ns/technology_and_science-the_new_york_times/ Why in the hell would my tax dollars go towards this when 90% of the time it won't be used for innocent stuff?

Hardly fair to say "your tax dollars" when you didn't even spend a cent on it. (you put forward $0.0068 to this project). Much larger grants have been given for far, far stupider and insidious things.

As long as I still have all my precious bitcoins...
