Havok 2.0 Physics In Everything

HL2, Max Payne 2, Far Cry... to name a few.

My debate is: Do you think we will see a large difference in the physics for each of these games? Why play HL2 when Max Payne 2 does the same thing but you can kick it into bullet-time mode to watch it all in slow motion glorification. Do you think the body physics will be the same for everything? Does each developer have the right to tweak the licensed havok code to their own tastes and if so who will do it the best?

I believe that this is an almost bad thing to have all these games license the havok engine. It will most certainly detract from diversity. Playing HL2 and then playing MP 2 to only have the same phsyics will be a disapointment to say the least. Homogenizing physics is good as in more games will have that level of interactivity but as I see it... innovation and excitment will take on a hinderance.

Thoughts?

The difference is that HL2 is using a heavily modified version of the Havok physics engine... Supposedly even the havok guys were amazed at what valve did with it!

The physics will be drastically different from each game. Each designer has designed their own physics engine based on Havok, it is not the same by a longshot.

Do you have a link or anything more on that? I'd be interested in reading... I'll go check Havok's website...

ya, t'would be cool to know what havok thinks about it?

phew, i'm quite relieved to know (maybe, no hard proof yet but I won't be a distrusting turd) that valve modified it.

truely the havok engine is allright, but the body physics are a bit akward, they seem to slide around a lot like on ice.

in the doom3 alpha leak there is a certain point in the game with one monster that has body phsyics and what id has done so far is quite impressive. It seems to be a tad better than the havok engine allthough i cannot truely say without experiencing havok first hand.

Well, if the Havok physics are good, I don't think it will detract from games for them all to use it; I mean, if physics work well, how can it be bad to use them? There's only one type of physics in the real world...

I think it's a good thing that there is a third party physics system like this; they can focus on improving their system whilst game developers can actually make the good games to take advantage of them; it can only mean better and more accurate and advanced physics in future games.

half life 1:quake engine::half life 2: havok physics engine

they're not the same, just HEAVILY modified.

What are you trying to say?

What are you trying to say?

He was saying that the same way HL1 used a heavily modified Quake engine, HL2 will use a heavily modified Havok engine.

Okay, I think a few people here are a bit confused.
Half-Life's graphics engine was a heavily modified version of the Quake 1 engine.
Half-Life 2's graphics engine is a brank-spankin-new in-house developed engine called Source
Half-Life 2's physics engine is a modified Havok 2.0 Physics Engine.

Wow nice example of the diversity of each game that uses Havok. That game is just Fugly!

*Wait.... Were you just jokeing about the Havok?

Hehe yeah I even made a "fake" havok site and put the game in it!!!!Muhahahahhaha!!!!11one

 Nah just playin, and you know this.

Don't think anyone has confused those in this thread.

SupaKoopa was simply saying (unless I'm mistaken) that in HL1, the Quake engine was heavily modified, and thus better, and in HL2 Havok is heavily modified, and thus better.

but by the sounds of what he said, he was comparing a graphics engine to a physics engine.

He is an Xbox fan so we have to assume he is retarded.

........

jk

Havok is insane. Ragdoll physics are easily the best technological invention in gaming for a long time. I love them. I love Havok.

They make for incredible realism and incredible hilarity.
