I am more than likely getting a ps3 next week and was interested in buying a HDMI cable for it. The thing is there are so many and the price range varies greatly. I mainly want it as I'm not fully sure will the PS3 support 1080p via component.

My Tv is the Samsung LE40M87BD and I know my TV displays 1080p over component with my 360, but with the PS3 I dunno.

Basically is there any reason to buy an expensive HDMI cable over a standard one I could get in an electronics store or even the supermarket?

Just make sure the quality of the cable is good enough so it doesn't malfunction (short, fall apart etc). You don't have to worry about signal shielding like you do with analog cables. The signal either gets through or it doesn't with digital (hdmi, dvi).

i got mine from amazon for a couple bucks, think it was 6 bucks or so. Works great.

The reason retail stores price gouge HDMI cables is that there are still a large amount of consumers who don't know any better, and do much of their electronics shopping in-store. For US shoppers, www.monoprice.com is bar none the best place to purchase all sorts of electronics cables.

I've heard mention of different versions of the HDMI cable. Like they improved it or something. Whats up with that?

HDMI 1.2 or something ???

I bought like 4 HDMI cords from www.monoprice.com for like $3 each so I can use it with a switchbox, and was thinking my cables are probably the old version or ... whatever that even means. Lower quality?

Currently, HDMI 1.3 is the newest spec. It offers support for higher resolution (1080p+), a higher refresh rate, support for up to 48-bit color depth (1.2 only supports up to 24-bit), and support for lossless audio format.

Unless you're going for a long cable ou might as well go for the cheapest. Once you start getting to 10m+ then it's worth buying better quality.

THanks for the info guys.

I got short cables. My current HDTV is only 720p anyway.

I've been wanting to sell it and get a large computer monitor instead. Not that I don't like it, but I don't use it much, and I use my computer daily.

Price != quality. Never buy into the marketing from Monster Cable, Belkin, or any other retail brands. As long as you buy a thicker gauge cable, the signal is no different.

I'm going to be buying a BenQ FP241VW for my newly purchased PS3. Unless you're wanting a giant HDTV for home entertainment purposes, I really prefer HD capable monitors.

I've used www.monoprice.com to buy my HDMI cables. The quality is very good and the prices are really reasonable. Since they are a bulk provider, just make sure you buy the right cables (i.e. don't buy HDMI cables for in-wall installations if you won't be using them for that.

They also have a brief run down on HDMI versions and other interesting information, which can be helpful if you are trying to understand HDMI. Link.

PS - monoprice cables are highly recommending by the people who regularly browse www.avsforms.com which is pretty much the place you go if you need to learn about TV's, home audio, etc.

Bought mine for $7.99 from Newegg. Some gold plated crap. Works great.
