Is it possible to issue some patch that would implement HDR in HL2. It's a damn shame that E1 has it and the original doesn't, it looks so much better.

Maybe some official info on this subject?

no way to patch it asfaik you need to recompile all the maps with hdr capabilities which is possible to do on your own.

It would take at least a 600MB download.

its a waste of time to add it in my opinion i mean hdr doesnt look that great in the source engine. now oblivion :DDDDD

Na, I agree somewhat with giant384.. :)

It isn't good looking enough to justify the work and effort that will have to be done to implement it

Yes, it's possible, but Valve said that would be a 2GB download. Maybe they'll do it someday, but I wouldn't count on it being anytime soon.

Don't really think it would add that much to the game, anyway. Sure, HDR looks nice, but it's not like it's the most important thing. Then again, there are people for whom it's all about the graphics...

Oh, and BTW. HDR has been added to HL2 levels for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions. But don't expect it to be brought over to the PC. I'd say our best bet is having it as a optional upgrade from the EP2 disc. Valve would be stupid to release it as a compulsory update.

if it was an optional download then its fine but forcefully then is it just plane stupid.

Valve could implement it as an optional download, alike to the HD pack for the original HL games.

I don't think a HDR update would require downloading all the maps - there are patch applications that calculate the difference between files, thus creating pretty small updates.

Also, Valve could extract the lightdata from the bsp's and force the engine to look for mapname.hdrlighting ;) That would significantly reduce such download.

You wish. Such patches, like RTP, are effective when you have large files that are getting a few changes. For example, several megabytes of text, and you're changing a few lines. Or a large texture pak-style file, to which you're adding one texture.

A counter-example would be Battlefield 2. It uses that very method of RTP patching, but the full patch (retail version to latest version) is, I believe, over 400 MB in size.
