The HDR lighting demands top of the line performance, so i bought a computer from www.magicmicro.com. It is excellent, and I have posted other information at this thread: http://www.halflife2.net/forums/showthread.php?t=77950
This is to help you guys out. I think that buying a barebones computer is cheaper than building one from scratch. Easily upgradeable. Just a FYI.

[with hindsight, i guess this should be moved to hardware and software. my bad]

buying at trade prices would cut the cost considerably too http://www.xenex.co.uk/default.aspx?WCI=Home&WCE=, if your able to. Alienware are the folks to be talking to if youve got the mullar, ive been haggling with dell and alienware over a top of the range laptop's they provide via the wonders of email, for a better deal, now they both want me.. muhahaha, Alienware is winning thus far :).

wow, i have never haggled with the brand name companies. How far did you get it down thus far?

well i got dell to drop their price by nearly £200, and include an extra 512mb of ram for free, the area 51 laptops are hard to haggle with, but ive got a fair discount after showing them dells offer ;), im not really at liberty to divulge the price through fear of flaming :p but you get far more for your money with alienware. Unless you are great at haggling with other companies.

I heard that HDR will only be supported on GeForce 6 series cards and the R520 when it arrives. No 9800/X800 will support it or so I hear.

Wasn't the HDR levels also known as the ATI levels.. so I doubt they wouldn't run on ATI cards?

True, also the current HDR videos and screenshots we've seen were actually produced on the ATI R420 core anyway. It's pretty solid evidence that it will run on the X800s.

the old hdr video that was relesed was runing on a gforce 4ti

Yeah everyone claims over in the steampowered forums that The HDR will only run on the geforce4 6xxx series "Because it doesnt have PIXEL SHADER 3.0!!111 lollerskates"
Which is complete and utter bullshit. See they believe it wont work because in farcry it doesnt work, but in farcry they uised a Certain method of producing the hdr that it only works with those line of cards. But i Guarantee any dx9 compatable ATI card will be able to run it.

Far Cry only requires the 6 series because of the floating point thingy whatever, I'm not sure if its the SM3 that does it. I myself liked the Far Cry HDR, but I thought it was a bit too much in certain areas of the game. In night scenes, it would be way to bright, like if the sun was out.

Hmm I am 99% sure it wasn't. I understand that proper HDR needs DX9 functionality.

That's because Far Cry uses a special technique for hdr that only nvidia's 6 series cards use.
