headcrab halloween costume

I came in expecting a person in a giant headcrab suit. I'm extremely disappointed.

basically i bought a few cans of expandable foam and a couple of polystyrene sheets from lowes along with appropriate spray paints; tan, darker tan, red, and black. then i cut a bunch of strips about 5~6 inches long using the width of the foam, which was about 16 inches. then i stacked them atop each other with a layer of expandable foam between each "brick" as a glue. any gaps that were left i filled in with expandable foam, and now i have a large cube with a slot in the middle. i topped that off with a dome made of expandable foam, and then used a large coarse wood file (like a cheese grater type tool) and a big serrated bread knife to shape the foam to a circle.

after i got the basic shape of the headcrab, i had to add the pincers. so i had bought a piece of thin all-thread rod. basically a piece of metal with screwthread down the whole length. i cut it to be about the length of each pincer and shoved it into the headcrab top where they should connect and curved\bent them to be the rough shape and angle of the pincers. then i sprayed these with expandable foam and built them up so that i could cut\sand them to the size i liked.

once i was done with the shape (it took about a week) i sprayed it with paint and such. i recommend not using spray paint for the base layer as it dissolves the foam. i would do a base primer in some sort of plastic based paint first. then spraypaint atop that.

the costume is fairly straight forward from here. i made the black mesa badge in photoshop and printed it out and stuck it into a nametag holder. i bought a $13 labcoat from a local scrub\uniform supply store. i went to the salvation army and got the tie, the light blue shirt, and jeans (same thing half life 1 scientists wear). i used spray paint for the blood on the clothes. just hold it up close and spray while it drips down the length. it woks well. after that dried, i mixed some spray paint with epoxy resin that i had laying around and painted the front area of a white undershirt so that it was red and solid when it dried. this gave me a real nice blood effect, and a base for my "ribcage". i sprayed expandable foam down to simulate ribs and guts. i then painted those accordingly, and i used the red spraypaint to "drip" the paint down. i sprayed it real close against the paint brush, and it dripped down onto the surface that i tilted up at an angle to simulate blood falling from my neck\head down my chest. the effect worked awesome.

i then took the epoxy\paint mix and dripped more down the clothes and shirt, and took the $10 halloween hands and painted them with epoxy\paint blood mix for added effect.

and thats about it

just make sure all the paint and epoxy dries before you try and put it on. i wish i had done more blood down the front of the shirt and some on the pants. but i think it turned out very well!

Man that headcrab is just awesome, even on its own. Maybe you should sand the top down flat and use it as a coffee table.
