yeah they did. they used the resonance cascade to send in the Xen slaves as an initial attack on earth.

Headcrabs are Xen wildlife, in Raising the Bar it explains how very few headcrabs mature to their final stage, the Gonarch(big momma), so I don't think they were engineered by the combine to do that...

Oh yeah, I forgot that Gonarch shoots baby headcrabs. Either way though, the Combine have turned them into weapons and if they haven't already, they will eventually make neccassary adaptations, just like any other synth.

Maybe I was to harsh, but it's not fact the Combine where on Xen at the time of HL, its speculation that has been blown up into the second coming because some guy with a website quoted some guy who was quoting marc laidlaw, and that quote of a quote is never quoted accurately by others.

well, it depends on what you think is a Synth.

Is absolutely anything biological the Combine touch a Synth?
Is it just the Striders, Mortars, Gunships etc?
Is just the striders and overwatch?

Did the Combine engineer the Poison and Fast headcrabs?

personally, I wouldn't call the headcrabs the Combine use 'Synths', even the engineered ones.
Infact, I wouldn't even call the Overwatch synths.

The Synth are Striders, Crabsynth, Mortarsynth, Drop-ships, Shield Scanners, Gunships, Wasteland Scanners, the old comcept for a Super Soldier, and possibly a few others. They all share a similar carapace system, and all look descended from the same stock.

If anything, that picture of the Gonarch sack hooked up to a machine proves that the Combine had no idea about Xen before HL2. In HL1, the headcrabs are produced by a free-range Gonarch. When the Combine found one, they obviously found it more efficient to machinate the sack, as it wouldn't need to move/feed/anything, just be fed stuff intravaneously. Just like chickens from KFC - just bags of flesh hooked up to a machine used to keep them alive (http://www.snopes.com/horrors/food/kfc.htm).

If anything, it proves how different the Xenians and Combine are.
