Hmm, I didn't notice it before, but just before you teleport to Nilihath ( The Final Boss ) via the Red Portal, stand for a moment and listen inside the incense (?) burners area.

You'll hear things from the beginning of the game :

" We tried to warn them " - Scientist
" Gordon, you're alright, thank god ..... etc"

I wonder if this somehow ties in with HL2 .........

I think it's either some drama-type stuff added to signify that fact that you're nearing the end, or it could be disorientation from the trip through whatever-space.

if thats the case, that points to the Resonace Cascade being a result of Gordon travelling to Xen and killing Nihilanth. So If someone had stopped Freeman from travelling to Xen then the whole thing would'nt have happened. Just a crazy theory

Nihilanth may be messing with Gordon's brain via his psychic communications.

I was replaying HL, and I was right near the end, so went and I checked that out.
There are definitely scientist dialogues going on there.

The quotes seem important because they all reference the fact that none of the science team were responsible for the cascade.
"We tried to warn them."
"I never thought I'd see a resonance cascade."

Nihilanth's invasion was a retaliation to the apparent intentional kidnapping that the cascade caused. So, maybe the quotes were his way of saying that he made a mistake, and that Gordon is not his real enemy?

It would explain his attempts to reason with him:
"I am the last."
"He is not man."
etc.

Maybe Nihilanth was trying to say that the real bad guy was the G-man?
G-man was apparently responsible for prepping the army for combat against the aliens, and even a human invasion of Xen (with the broken tanks and planes lying around in Xen at the end, and the dead marines.)

Could it be that Gordon shouldn't have done what G wanted, and killed Nihilanth, because Nihilanth wasn't evil?
Ooh... conspiracy!

Thats one hell of a theory. I think he is trying to say that the G - Man is the real enemy, perhaps he is trying to tell Gordon something through use of something said in the past.

"We tried to warn them."

he may be saying to Gordon that this wasnt an accident, it was planned somewhat.

And i never thought the Nihalinth was evil, because the scientist at the top of the lambda lab says "Theres an immense concentration." i just thought of the Nihlanith as trying to focus and keep the portals open.

Yup, if you play Decay, you find out that all the aliens sent in (before the marines show up) were sucked there by accident.
Nihilanth doesn't actually start to hold the portal open and invade earth until the marines appear.
That, along with his calling humans "thieves", show that Nihilanth's attack was almost definitely provoked by the cascade.
And the cascade was maybe caused by the G-man, who was preparing marines to defend against the cascade...

Agh! It's so complex!

And some people say HL has a simple plot. :)

I think it is obvious that the Resonance Cascade was simply a planned attempt to provoke Xen, thereby giving an excuse to invade Xen back.

It could easily be possible that Nihilanth was not really evil - and the G-man was. In fact, I believe that the G-man is simply out to rule everything...or maybe G and N are simply two opposing evils. Whatever, we'll have to wait.

i'm probably really stupid, but i think the g-man is a good guy. maybe the "he is not man" is in reference to the admin...? and maybe dr breene is actually the admin, and killing the nihilanth allows for the combine in hl2??? i dunno...

You have to remember that even prior to the resonance cascade, humans were invading Xen, carrying off alien life-forms and taking the crystals.

The crystal that caused the resonance cascade in the first place was taken from Xen, as was all the creatures being experimented on in "Questionable Ethics".

The Nihilanth was pretty justified in invading Earth, but it was also justifiable for Gordon Freeman to kill him to end the invasion, to try and save Earth.

Personally, I just want to find out what the G-Man's agenda is. He's manipulating events, but to what end?

I can't quote directly, but the 'thieves' thing probably refers to the taking of crystal samples.

Evidence: In Decay's bonus mission as a Slave you are sent to 'recover' some crystals which you eventually find in the back of an Army truck.

And when he says "their slaves, we are their slaves" he is referring to the combine...

IMHO

I'd have thought he was reffering to the G-Man's Employers .....

Yeah since the Combine are an Earth-based authority imo. :|

i agree, i think the combine are just the police of city 17, they are there to keep alieans out of the city...

"Heh...Wrong"

How do you know this?

And If its the beta you do realise you just spoilt part of the game for us.

THANKS MAN!!!

Yeah. Wtf was with the "Heh...wrong" comment? Don't make such stupid statements. It's not big nor clever. Any hint at the beta, whether truthful or not, can ruin the prospect for some fans.

excuse me, but could someone please tell me what resonance cascade means?i'm not very good at english, so i really cant understand it! :D

It's the thing that caused all the portals to open throughout Black Mesa.

Mabye the g-man also are a combine.

Maybe Nihilanth was trying to talk to Gordon through what these people said. As in, Nihilanth warned the BMRF research teams to stop meddling around, and they didn't listen, so Nith opened a bunch of portals. "We tried to warn them"...

I also tend to think that the pure crystal that triggered the cascade was planted. Something for the collection teams to find that would open a larger tear between Earth and the Border World.

hmm what do you mean with beta ?

well i think the combine are just the human military . they have some strange missions in city17 but they are not there to hold the city or to save anyone.

Question: Has anyone here heard of the oil tanker level?
And yes, it is on topic... sort of.

So in the PS2 version of HL, you get to play as a slave in bonus missions?

Yes.

What if the whole of HL2 is simply a fabrication, created by a dark council of controllers to trap you in it's unreal world forever for the amusement of its makers in return for your money?

the oil tanker level was cut back in the alpha version.
you mean version 1.0.0.0? There are people who claim to have the very, absolutely first version of HL which was recalled due to problems with the Nvidia cards or something, and the rpoblem was solved by removing that level. but these people calim that they actually have the version with the oil tanker level. Sadly though, they can't provide with screenshots. Anyone here who can?

Aj, your best chance of finding the answer would be to start a new thread. Right now, people would only be able to answer if they stumbled into this one at random.

There is a large boat level in HL2 though, assuming they haven't changed it since those very old previews.

And Sulkdodds:
Then it would be a FPS Metal Gear Solid 2. :p

people who would really have the "very first version" shouldve already uploaded the maps, i cant find anything :(

appearentaly it's embedded into the actually .exe-file and is only accessable if you run through the whole game at hardest difficulty.

So why don't they sell the entire game? I'd buy it.
