Flagship Studios now officially announces Hellgate: London, the upcoming first person action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic London. Here's some info:

Set twenty-five years in the future, HELLGATE: LONDON introduces a world devastated by a demon invasion and a desolate city scorched by hellfire where mankind has gone underground to survive. Among them are the Templar, an archaic and secret society that foresaw this demonic apocalypse centuries ago. Followers of arcane rites, the Templar combine futuristic technology with ancient artifacts to forge powerful weapons and armor. The mystic sanctuary of the Underground system provides players safe conduct throughout the sprawling metropolis of London as they seek to preserve the bloodline of man and gain a foothold against the minions of darkness.

HELLGATE: LONDON combines the depth of role-playing games and action of first-person titles, while offering infinite playability with randomly created levels, items, and events. The player creates a heroic character, completes quests, and battles through innumerable hordes of demons to advance through experience levels and branching skill paths. A robust, flexible skill and spell system, highly customizable appearances, and a massive variety of randomly generated equipment allow players to create their own unique hero. Sounds allright, apart from it sounds abit "Bloodlines" ish... "Rpg/fps" which totally failed, due to bad use of the engine and buggy coding. But whatever, sounds cool.

Could be pretty awesome if they do things correctly.

but here's a chance for them to right what was wrong in Bloodlines, which i still enjoyed, even if it was kinda rough

It was announced with Pc: G a while back ya know..
So this was announced like not the last issue but the issue before that.

This isn't being made by Trokia, it is being made by Flagship Studios, a new company from ex-blizzard north employs.

with randomly created levels
That suggests pretty generic levels. I like my levels to be lovingly crafted down to the smallest details, like in Thief 3.

The downside to that is almost zero replayability.

I do have to admit that you are strikingly handsome.

Well, mother gave you the indubious title of Stud Muffin.

lol!! "mom, what's a stud muffin" ..."well son, see your dad over there....."

/me makes hurling sounds

gahhk guhhh blech

stick to your tread?! stop stepping on me!

ps: try crazy glue, it tends to stick better

Sounds interesting. I'm not into the demons/hell/brimstone aspect though. I like the idea of a new FPS/RPG type format though.

This game will need a solid 3rd person mode for melee combat. I hope the engine will be able to render a lot of ennemies on screen at the same time, even if they have to be less detailed.

Anyways, it looks very interesting for now :). I cant wait to see the final product.

I wouldnt' say soo..
*Pulls out Pc:G magazine"
I would say...dead wrong..

I mean these people did the Random level generation for Diablo 1. Which was real real nice random level generating :).

Hellgate: London Interview!

Gamespot has conducted an interview with Erich Schaefer of Flagship Studios talking about Hellgate: London, their upcoming first person action RPG set in a post-apocalyptic London. Here's a taster:

GS: Tell us about what Hellgate: London is and what it isn't. Will the game emphasize addictive hack-and-slash gameplay with repeated play-throughs like Diablo, or will the game put more emphasis on story and quests?

Erich Schaefer: The experience of Hellgate: London will be very visceral. Expect plenty of random, slot-machine-style loot and an infinite variety of combat situations. Coupled with randomly generated, respawning levels, this hack-and-slash gameplay will likely encourage repeated play-throughs and hopefully lead to long-term replay value. That said, we plan to more fully incorporate our quest structure into the game experience. The storyline quests will drive the story, not just serving as random chores along the way. We also intend to create randomized missions to provide a little more meaning for the hack-and-slash.
Here, he discusses the game's multiplayer options:
GS: What can you tell us about your plans for multiplayer? Will multiplayer be mainly focused on individual server-based (or direct-IP-based) co-op play? Any plans for competitive modes?

ES: Hellgate: London will support many modes of single-player and online play. Most importantly, we will be providing a destination where players can congregate in large or small numbers within the world. Here, they will be able to group up for adventures, trade items, or just hang out and chat. Plans for competitive modes are just being discussed now, but our main emphasis will be on supporting cooperative adventuring
