First of all the game is awsome so far, :) compliments to Carmack and the rest of ID (what a suck up  ), playing it chunks at a time, first hour is definately the best.

so even though I havnt completed it yet, I went back to roughly play the first hour again,

so.. I came across the first bathroom, that has nothing intresting in it seemingly other than some nice lighting, toilets and a mirror, I pranced around infront of the mirror first time firing off my pistol :imu: ,, but unlike the first time, I used the zoom feature on the mirror second time round.

playing in the dark aswell, It was probably the scariest thing ive seen in a game,, made my hairs stand on end, if you hav'nt already seen what ive seen, I suggest you take a look in that first bathroom mirror you come across with the zoom feature  . ;)

haha. It's a great scene isn't it, especially when you simply don't expect it. Very well done.

Err.. what zoom feature are you talking about?
And can you spoilertag what happens, just want to make sure I saw it properly

it wasnt really scary for me but thats because my pc lagged 2 seconds b4 it happpened to i expected something to happen :)

lol, that scared the shit out of me :) especially the way your face ages through the mirror...

next time i went in a bathroom i stared at the mirror for 5 minutes thinking "bring it on.." but nothing happened.

i love doom3, great graphics and sounds, brilliant game, but the bits before the monorail / delta labs are crap... where youre underground with all the old machinery. gets so boring shooting deamons, i just wanted to get back to civilisation (or what remains of it). now im at delta labs, hopefully this will be good :D

You might want to check the controls, there's a zoom button. :)

That was great yes. But this "We. Must. Constantly. Spawn. Monsters. Behind. you. Becasue. Our. Designers. Are. Rubbish. At. Gameplay" Routine is starting to get on my tits.

I walked in... AND IT HAPPENED! But it didn't surprise me, i just sat there going... "what happened", i think i blinked :-/ . Then I realized "Ohhhh! This is the freaky mirror people were talking about online! It sucked :flame: NOT. SCARY.

i broke my rear left speaker stand while looking in that mirror

i jumped back with such force that the metal (but hollow) pole just cracked and gave way. man i'm such a sissy :p

If only the whole game was like that...

yeh,, here's what I dont get with the cheap shots... ones like 'Doom 3 isnt that deep and its repetitive, ' which of course is obvious, which is why playing it in small amounts goes along way to enjoying it more. It's pretty much in your face that ID were'nt aiming for excessive human interaction and depth to the story and gameplay.. for that Isolated WTF is going on kind of feel.

its a modern incarnation of doom as ID said, and it's fantastic, I say look at it for what it is, not for what you thought it would of been like watching those E3 video's.

it gets 110% for effort, and inginuity, and considering its Doom I dont think the gameplay really draws much away from their hard work.

The main problem stemmed from the whole "Doom 3 VS HL2" phenomenon. Everywhere, the general concensus from those anticipating the game was that Doom 3 was going to be equal or better than HL2 in every possible way.
It was going to be Doom 1's premise expanded and improved by giving it the features equal to or better than any modern game.

Great AI and physics would let the enemies climb walls and hurl barrels. A professional writer would take Doom 1's bare-boned premise and make it into a professional plot where scripted sequences would replace cutscenes.
I, a die-hard Half-Life fanboy, never really expected Doom 3 would live up to this hype, but even I was expecting Doom 3 to be at least a substantially upgraded HL1.

The thing is, when id said that Doom 3 would be Doom 1 remade for today, everyone expected that to mean that their favorite guns and enemies from the old game would be back, with everything else substantially improved.

When Doom 3 haters and HL2 fans said that Doom 3's gameplay would be just the standard walk-shoot-walk-key-door gameplay of Doom 1, the general rebuttal wasn't that run-and gun gameplay was traditional. It was that id, the creators of the FPS, knew better than to leave the gameplay unchanged.

Now that the game's out, the AI, outside of many 100% scripted events, is generally described as fairly stupid. The physics that had been shown and described are practically MIA. The plot, although better, is still considered fairly basic.

As a result, the opinion of the game has largely changed.
Instead of "the AI is going to be great", we have "Doom was never about having good AI".
Instead of "Doom 3's physics will give HL2 a run for its money," we have "physics just aren't Doom's style."
Instead of "Doom 3 will have a great plot", we have "well, no-one expected Doom 3 to have a great plot."

Basically, instead of using Doom 1 as a platform on which to create a revolutionary game, Doom 1 is now the excuse for why Doom 3 isn't revolutionary.

for a fps, Doom 3 doesn't have a bad plot at all. If you consider that

A. You knew how it would start
B. You knew how it would end
C. You pritty much knew you were going to shoot everything going through it.

I mean HL's plot was never its selling point for me. I think HL2 will have a usual plot with twists that are pritty clear if you just think for a second.

Sorry for the poor quality, best I could do, I didnt realise what was going on ;p

I guess but ID have said that all the time anyway, so why make excuses from the start.

I just think that's a load of preconceptual retorical noncence. It's a genre breaker, full stop. Comparing it to HL2 is like trying to get a catholic woman and protestant man to have sex, they may be compatable as human's but there methods just wont allow it :p

I think it's very funny when people say "id is recreating doom 1" only when it's convenient. One of the main features of D1 were the many times when you had to clear a gigantic room full of all kinds of monsters (that's what I came to expect from D1 and D2), and that just doesn't happen in D3. One could argue that the engine wouldn't be able to handle too many enemies, but if it's a D1 recreation, it should.

I havent seen the mirror effect the first time I finished the game but I will play again to check it out :) sounds cool

I don't get it...Whats so scary about "The Mirror effect"?

Because it's so unexpected. Obviously, if you know about it before hand, it won't have the same effect.

I didn't know about it beforehand and I thought it sucked. I saw it and went "ooh another cutscene" and expected to be scared by it. What's so scary about a red filter and the guy aging?

THe whole game was like that for me... terribly dissapointing even after the end. I got none of the promised scares from Doom 3 and as a horror fan I am truly saddened by it. They just don't make good horror games very often, they shouldn't have marketed this game as one :(

I agree, really. I was never scared, I jumped a total of 6 times throughout the entire game, and I was hoping for so much more. :(

Oh, I did, I loved it. But, I was hoping to be scared throughout the entire thing
Instead, I got a few cheap starteling "jumps," and never felt scared. Ah well, it was a very atmospheric and alltogether extremely well polished game, just not atmospheric to my expectations.

What level is this bathroom in exactly? I would like to check it out, with out searching around for ages.

Was there an intro for the cherub as I've a strong feeling that I missed something involving it. The first time I encountered them was down in Maintenance in that long flashing corridor where about 10 of them come at one one after the other. Was the the first encounter with them? As I never heard the "they took my baby" line either. I'm either very deaf or I've missed something.

Nope.. no intro to the cherub. They did have the "they took my baby!" part, when the screen turned red and you couldn't move, but it wasn't an intro, as you didn't see cherubs until later.
