Hey,

I bought HL2 a month or so after it came out, and everything ran fine, completed the game, all smooth, great.

Then a few months after buying it I would get this message before I started the game:

Video Driver Outdated
__
Your video drivers appear to be out of date and could cause problems if you choose to continue and run the game. We strongly recommend that you follow the link below and update your video drivers to the latest version available from your driver vendor.

Your driver details:
Windows Version: Windows XP
Description: ATI MOBILITY RADEON 9600/9700 SERIES
Version: 6.14.10.6458

I went to the driver page and downloaded what I assumed was the right driver (Hydravision), but it made no difference, the game warning still came up before I played.
Reading the FAQ with the driver update, it showed that the driver update was dated 2003, whereas the date of the drivers on the actual computer is 2004 (which doesn't explain why I would need to "update" to and older driver)

The game ran fine though, despite the message beforehand, so I just ignored and kept playing.

Unfortunately, about a week and a half ago HL2 has been stuttering when I try to play (online and normal game) and it's doing my head in.
I haven't done anything to my computer to make the game act this way, and I won't put the graphics down to the worst settings, because it ran fine before when they were at the levels they are now.

Can anyone help? Anyone else have similar problem with the driver message etc?

hmmm.

I haven't had the error message, but I've had the sudden stutterings.

But reformatting solved it. I don't advise this though.

I guess I could just uninstall and reinstall HL2, but i'm not too sure what difference that would make.

Aren't the hydravision drives for multimonitor functionality? You should check that you have the latest Radeon Drives for your mobility gfx chip. If my memory serves me correctly, they have an app that will check to see if the mobility radeon drivers are compatible with your gfx chip.

There aren't any Radeon drivers on the ATI website (which is where it directs me to), and when I get the computer to check for updates for Radeon drivers, it points me towards the current drivers that I already have (which my computer came with when I bought it).

From the description, I would have thought I needed Hydravision?
