I have just remembered a game today, and I have forgotten the name...

I was talking about medieval first and third person games, and discussing how we need more of them, ones such as mount and blade, and rune. I continued thinking of games, when my friend asked about a game which I had showed him like, at least 6 years ago. If not longer....

The game was third person, if my memory is correct.
The game had a medieval setting.
The game was bloody.
The game had the ability, using an editor, to customize your own moves
The game had dismemberment
While I was playing so long ago, I remember fighting dog like creatures.
The graphics were 3D of course...

I dont think it was RUNE. The graphics were grainier than rune...

I remember actually picking this thing up in the store when I was a kid, I just cant remember the name... I want to play it again. heh.

If anyone knows maybe, ...anything.... just post a reply. Help me out lol

Thanks..

EDIT: For people replying to the thread, the game is "Die By the Sword".

No problem :D
Coincidentally,
I just got through with playing the game a few hours ago. :p

yeah, I got the CD sitting righ tnext ot me, was about to answer for you, then lucid's pwnage beat me :(

Yeah, I'm not a particularly big fan of the game.
Just forgot that I had it installed... I figured I'd give it a whirl...
The only thing I absolutely HATE about it, is the fact that you can't use the mouse.
The controls are absolute crap.

uhm...you can use the mouse perfectly...it's good for the sword movement total freedom...

only thing is when you play the instant battles you can't use the mouse for the mantis and lava-golem since you have to press a key for charging their attacks(can't remember what they call it)

Elaborate please.

you use keys for walking around and the mouse for your sword arm and chopping enemies to pieces... takes a little to get used to(since you don't turn and look around with the mouse...just chop people into bits)

I'm surprised you didn't know this...since it's one of the features that makes die by the sword so unique...it's the only game I've played where you have completely free movement with the sword.

if you were reffering to the mantis/golem thing... then you can't use the mouse for attack movement since you have to press a charge button in conjunction with the the keys that corresponds: high-left/right/center , middle-left/right/center, low-left/right/center...unfortunately the charged attack function doesn't work with the mouse so you have to control the mantis and golem entirely with the keys(which is a hassle since you have to control both movement aswell as attack swings with the keys)

While this thread is still alive,

Why is this the only game with these mechanics?

Why is this the only game where you can make your own custom attacks?

I mean, its like, what 7 years later, and no game has even come close to exploring what that game did. I think it would be awesome to have a free flowing sword, maybe a free flowing shield too would be awesome.

Makes me wonder, why games are still so linear....

Nevermind!!! I just found out you have to enable Mouse:VSIM in the controls... but I still have to use the other keys for turning. :(

Is there some sort of option to turn off the mouse look?

I know in old games like Blood II, Quake II there was a mouse-look option..

EDIT: Oh Nice, Glad you fixed it :) I beleive Space said you still have to use keys to turn, but the mouse is just for sword movement...

well to be honest although the mechanics were fresh and good in concept the execution wasn't the greatest. having to move your sword around with the mouse allowed you some freedom but at the same time it made the controls less user friendly...I think most developers rather go with a simpler more straight forward control scheme. also from an aesthetic point of view it looked rather spastic :D although it was rather fun chopping off the heads of three ogres in one spastic move....

also trespasser tried a similar control scheme where you had to control your arm independenly of view to pick up weapons and items and aiming....neihter "trespasser" nor "die by the sword" sold very well AFAIK.

Good point, having your mouse move the sword, limits the movement of your character...

So maybe if someone thought of a better way to play out combat, with just as much functionality. Maybe someone will come out with a new game controller or something, that can help that out...

I think that if a game like the new Elder Scrolls did something like that, and did a good job, the industry would change...Because all the copycat companies, need some inspiration from the big house companies :)

A mouse doesn't cut it really for easy movement in space of an object as it's limited to movement on a plane

Speaking of innovation, cross racing championship 2005 has an innovative way to change the gears - you use your mouse as a gearstick and actually move into the gear you want. Unfortunately it too seemed to be hard to control :/

How about a mouse with a thumbstick on the left or right side of the mouse, depending on what hand you use?

That'd be neato.

I still have the Die By The Sword box lying on the stair box thinger in my room.

Is it still an properly fun game to play nowadays, and does the sword properly block attacks if you have it in the right place? I can't remember if it was gimmicky or actually worked back in the day...

it should work...

How about two mice..

one for movement, so you bind a button on the mouse to walk/run and move ur mouse where u want to go. The second mouse for sword movement! Maybe you can switch to shield movement too, where u can idle ur sword, and switch between them using the same mouse! :D

That would be a sick combo! Especially since u can block and stuff. Amazing sword fights...
