Help...game does not run

Anyone run into a problem after install (took almost 5 hours) where you jus sit at the Loading screen?

First launch, game didn't do anything screen went black, and nothing. Killed the program and tried again, this time got the valve logo, and then the loading screen, but that is it. Just sits at this screen. Left it there for some time just in case, but nothing works.

System:
P4 3.0
1 gig ram
ATI x800 pro
on board sound max

Any thoughts?

If it took 5 hours, then yes, something's f*cked.

Not necessarily, Mine took 5 hours this morning, and it works perfectly... Make sure you do not have antivirus enabled in BIOS... Also, experiment with video drivers, that can put a quick black stop to your game.... Remember, one of the first things that takes the hit when starting up a PC, or a game is, your video card.... Not ruling out a corrupt file either though... but I would mess around with the above first..

i have that same problem too, only the thing is, hl2 worked perfectly fine the first time i played it, played for like 2 hours then quit and left computer idle, then i came back to play tonight(hadn't touched the computer since that morning when i played, and didn't install/dl anything) and now i'm having the same problem as him. cs:s works fine, always has. any ideas as to what the problem could be? the only thing that was different when i went to play the second time was that i had aol instant messenger running, but that shouldn't make the game crash. i'm dlin the game again as i'm typing this.
