i looked over the RECCOMENDED requirements for the game and i think im all set in that area. both half life 2 and half life 2 episode 1 work flawlessly on my computer at full graphics, but for some reason half life 2 episode 2 has a really bad framerate.
if i missed something in the requirements let me know. this is my computers information:
- Acer Aspire Desktop computer.
- Windows Vista Home Premium.
- 4 Gb of RAM
- Plenty of hard drive space.
- Intel Pentimum Dual CPU E2200 @ 2.20GHz 2.2 GHz
- NVIDIA GeForce 7100.

I just got this computer cause i thought the 4 gigs of ram would take care of any framerate issues, but i guess i was wrong.
If you figure out what the problem is or what i can do you fix it then reply to this.

Sounds like a problem with the game. Try verifying the integritty of the game's files (there's an option for it in Steam somewhere). Also, check out Steampowered.com's support question.

BTW, expect a few people to start accusing you of having a pirated copy. Someone always does no matter what the problem people are having is.

I got accused of having a pirated copy when I was the first person to post about the double Alyx glitch.

The first person? You joined in 2007, three years after HL2 game out. I would be rather suprised if you were the first person to post it seeing as how it's a relatively comon glitch.

Touche. It may be common but not many people had posted about it figuring it was their game.

My money's on the 7100 causing the problem. Episode 2 is a modern game with modern graphical techniques which can be quite strenuous to run.

well thats what i thought initially cause for vista rating system my lowest score is a 3.0 and thats the graphics

That graphics chipset really isn't that beefy. I played Halflife 2 Episode 2 on my laptop before I built my gaming computer, and opted for medium settings, with a 2.0 ghz Core 2 Duo, 2gb RAM and a Nvidia 7400Go. Not too different from yours, and I wouldn't dare run Episode 2 on high.

The misconception is Episode 2 has the same requirements as Episode 1 and HL2. The orange box games are actually on a modified and enhanced version of the Source engine with higher demands. Your 4gb of RAM are fine, you are probably bottlenecked by that graphics card.

Also, are you using Vista Home Premium 64bit? Standard 32bit OS's only use just over 3gb of RAM, so your 4th gigabyte won't even be used if you are on 32bit.

I?m sure that the graphic card is the bottle neck as well. I have a Pentium 4 3.00 Ghz with 1.5 Gb of ram and i have the FPS constant above 30, and im using full full graphics 1280x1024, and the highest also for the other setups... But, of course, i have a GForce GT8600 512DDR3. Lately the games are more graphics card demanding than CPU demanding, i played the game before with the same rig but a GS7100 series and the FPS was poor. A simply test is this: your graphics card have a textures and polys buffer lower than most hl2 episode 2 maps.

What res are you running?

If it is a software problem steam support has a page on things you can try. But it is probably your graphics card, a Geforce 7100 isn't a new card and it wasn't the greatest card even when it was new so I wouldn't expect it to be able to run Ep2 at max details.

BTW, expect a few people to start accusing you of having a pirated copy. Someone always does no matter what the problem people are having is.
Scanner + Technical Problem = Pirate. It's a simple formula, duh.

I got accused of having a pirated copy when I was the first person to post about the double Alyx glitch.
Was that when you had two Alyx's running around?
