Hello!

I want to buy HL2 silver edition, but I don't know if I buy it via steam will they send me a retail version after downloading the game or not, because I want to buy the retail version, but only two versions are available and I don't need collector's edition and in the basic retail version there's no HL1-source and DoD-source... I don't need T-shirt, book or stuff like this, I need only the full games of the silver edition...

THX. :sniper:

You don't get a retail version buying via Steam - though you can burn your own. I'd suggest that HL1-Source isn't particularly worth paying for, unless you've never played HL1 at all, so it depends how badly you want DoD.

If I were you I would buy the silver edition and if you want you can backup the data by following this guide

if you want the retail cds/DVD AND DOD:S & HLS then just get retail and upgrade it to silver on steam (Valve have said that upgrades will be availible on steam at a later date, probs before the release of DOD:S and HLS)

Hi!

Then I'll buy the retail version and will upgrade to silver (and backup HL1-source and DoD-Source)!

Thanks for helping me guys!

Greetings from Hungary.

When and where?

The only thing i've heard from valve is that you specifically WONT be able to upgrade your retail copy.

Can anyone shed a light on this? This problem now and then pops up, but I've never seen a definitive answer.

There is NO upgrade path to a Steam Version, from a Retail version.

The only exception, is the ATI voucher, but that is not a retail version anyway, so it dont' count.

If you dont' mind steam, then just buy it via steam. You can burn backups for a quick install later if you need to and you can get the game right away and don't have to leave the house to get it.

Same thing I've heard...You can't upgrade if you buy retail, it would be silly of valve to let you.

But if I somehow lose HL2 wothout a backup, I still will be able to download a new for free, right?

Yes. Or so I think.

Correct, all your games are bound to your steam account, so aslong as you can login to the steam account you ordered the game with, you can download and play anywhere.

u can...but Valve is releasing a backup utility which will be part of Steam (i think) and that will allow u to backup ur Steam cache files.

Sorry, I was wrong, there is NO upgrade from retail to silver
