Help me!!!!......

the questions refuse to load for me. anyone paste the question here?

yep, i updated IE a couple of weeks ago. tried viewing it with firefox too. ah well.

Likewise badger!

You got it tomorrow?

I got a resit of it. I got a U on my last attempt. Which was... erm... irritating...... :sniper: :flame: :sniper: :flame: :sniper: :flame:

Ahem! I hope to get a B this time since I have actually worked.. ;)

Yep, Edexcel M1 in the morning. It's gonna be fun.

I'm good at Mechanics... I take Physics too, they make sense, unlike nasty stats!

ITS A SUNDAY IM NOT DOING MATHS
im revising for my PE gcse
WHICH IM GONNA FAIL
but i seem to be getting distracted by CS
NOOOO IM GONNA GET A F
:(
:(
:(

Heheh, I take physics an all. And I havnt met more than 3 people who actually like stats.

Do you know the answer to part D of said question. I dont know why but I seem blind to the answer today...

I can do everything else.... just that little....... thing!

Me = :monkee: today

It's GCSE PE, you pass by finding your toes.

If you think GCSEs are hard. Wait till next year.

You know what I find scary...

My brother is doin computer science where I want to do it.

And he only has 6 hours worth of lectures a week. And he STILL says uni is more work than sixth form!!!!

:'( :(

Marksman, I was doing this kind of question this morning :/

i & j componants, my worst part of M1 ;(

Its strange for me actually...

I understand everything about I and J vectors just fine. No problems at all. (Cept said question of course :p)

However, when it comes down to it in an exam I cant seem to remember what to do....

I dont think its nerves at all. Since I only feel nerves once I realise that I cant do it. ;)

i did P1, P2 and M1 in college.

marksman, your bro is a big fat liar ;) is he in his final year? that's the only year where you do any actual work. 1st and 2nd years are just piss. i've got 8 hours of lectures a week, spend the rest of my time playing championship manager (and my save game of 8 seasons has just died on me!! grrrrrrrr).

I am the same way with anything that has to do with math, I can remember history, geography, vocab, parts of a book I read/didn't read a month ago, etc. But I can never remember how to do any god damn math problems. I could get As in all my classes but the best I could do in math was a B.

Well thats good to hear :) lol

You ppl work too hard.

I never study and get straight 5/5s.....

Ah I did this question on mathsnet yesterday actually. Mathsnet.net is very good :).
If you had the answer to (b) in the version of the question i got here its :
AB=(250 - 12t)i +10tj

So now think of it as a triangle you have 250 - 12t going to the right and 10t going up
draw the triangle. It is a right angled triangle therefore you need to find the hypothemuse or however you spell it using pythagorus :).
so thats X^2= (250- 12t) ^2 + (10t)^2

X is the hypotemuse which equals the distance AB=250 therefore subtitute X with 250
and there you have it :).
Good luck on your mechanics exam. Im hoping for a C ...

Its ok, its more revision :). Most of the questions on mathsnet are a little too easy so id do some exam papers as well, usually most of the questions are the same old thing and examiners just repeat questions with different data and a slightly different situation so I find once you have done loads you can do pretty much any question :D. ( edit- although i still cant do those bloody "particle on a slope" questions well I have to draw out the components to work out where things go :()
You're retaking mechanics then? What about stats/decision + pure?

I'm hoping to exceed a D, but I'd be happy with a D, then I'll retake it till i get an A :)

well, i'm not sure how to explain it, but i'll give it a go. i'm not sure which question you got, since the page loads different questions randomly, but part D) is always about "when are the cars X meters apart again", right?

think in vector space, an x-y graph. look at the positions of the cars. the distance between the cars at any given time is the vector AB, which is s-r as given in part B.

r is defined as (Mt)i (where M is the speed of car A [it was 15 m/s on my page] and i is the x unit vector)
s = (x' + Nt)i + Otj (where N and O are the x and y components of the speed of car B, j being the y unit vector of course, and x' is the position of car B at t=0)

as part B laid out, the distance vector between the cars is the vector AB (of course), and that vector is defined as the position vector of B minus the position vector of A, which is s-r, which is:

(x' + N-Mt)i + Otj

now, part D asks when that distance will again equal the initial distance at t=0. just set the terms equal (it looks like they may have skipped a tiny bit in the opening of the solution):
|AB| = x'
recall that for the vector AB= Xi + Yj, the length of AB, written |AB| = (X^2 + Y^2)^1/2 (that is, "root of the quantity: x-squared plus y-squared").
this is basic goemetry, of course.. just the good ol' pythagorean theorem, since AB is our hypotenuse.

well for our case:
AB=s-r, so |AB|= [(x' + N-Mt)^2 + Ot^2]^1/2
and we know |AB| = x' so square both sides,
(x' + N-Mt)^2 + Ot^2 = x'^2
and then it's just arithmetic

it may help if i use real numbers:
A = 15i, B = 8i+10j, x' = 400
AB = s-r = (400 + [8-15]t)i +10tj = (400 - 7t)i + 10tj
|AB| = [(400 - 7t)^2 + 10t^2]^1/2
at |AB| = 400:
400^2 = (400 - 7t)^2 + 10t^2
400^2 = 400^2 -5600t +49t^2 + 100t^2
149t^2 = 5600t
devide both sides by t
149t = 5600
t = 5600/149 = 37.584 seconds

hope that helps more than it hinders.

edit: doh! too slow :bonce:

Yeah, I practiced hard and last time i did a timed paper by myself i managed to get a D :) but ive practiced more and Ironed out the problems ive found on that paper so im hoping for a C but really like bishop said (pure maths teacher) its the marks you need not the grade. :)

shit. i dont want to be in year 11

So.....todays exam. Im posting 20 mins after the exam finished. How did you guys find it? It was kind of easy but in the second last question i thought i and j were in m/s
so i had to quickly do it again with different units at the end . But still got it done fine in the end ....hopefully. I managed to do the whole paper without too much differculty but i probably made loads of stupid mistakes.

*laughs heartily at all the people taking A-Levels or A/S exams*

*remembers how he scored and goes off to sulk*

Seriously, I take one look at that calculation and my brain starts to beg for mercy. I got an almost full mark Double Award (AA) in GCSE Science but Unclassified in A/S level Physics. I got a D in GCSE Maths, which is presumably why I dropped it for sixth form; i.e., I suddenly realised I HATED IT.

How can you people keep abusing your brains like this?! Surely you can't make any sense out of all that numerical gibberish...

Yup... its good to know i don't need Maths for anything i plan to do, which is why the school let me drop Year 11 maths. Yeeeeeeeeppp....feels mighty good. Mmmm-hmmm mighty good indeed.

*Struts off

My maths class seems to be going backwards. Where doing the bloody slope intercept form for crying out loud, can't I do something like Trigonometry?

Damn teachers

... slope intercept form?

Man, I hate maths. It is eeevil!

Mechanics stops me getting a U :) its much easier then pure or stats, i actually like doing mechanics and pure but i hate stats. I dont need maths but it certainly helps what im doing :D

I'm goin thru the exams too, having serious problems concentrating on revision with the sun shining outside these days though! What exams have you guys got to go at AS level? I'm working my way through english language, history, media studies & english literature (oh plus general studies, but that dont really count)...could never get my head round maths, left that behind at GCSE!
