My friend and I are trying to create a server so just us can play and mess around. We've searched the net high and low for 2 weeks and STILL can't get it to work. We've tried using "create a server" in the application, Dedicated Server, and Source Dedicated Server. All, with the same result.

First, the result; when people join they are connected, then they get disconnected and in the console it says the account is already being used in a different location. Bam, that's it.

We've read that is can be a firewall problem. That we possibly need ports open. We added ports, didn't work. We completely shut off our firewalls, didn't work. And, neither of us use any router of any kind. I have dsl and he has cable.

I've tried sv_lan 0, sv_region 0, net_start, then hostname, pword, reload map.

Doesn't work. We are at our wits ends. We think we're two fairly intelligent people, yet we can't get this damn thing to work.

Please help, even a look in the right direction would be much appreciated. If you need any more information just let me know.

it says the account is already being used in a different location.
So you are using different Steam accounts, right?

Since no one decided to help us, we helped ourselves. It's so simple it's ridiculous, and even more so that everyone else wouldn't tell us. You have to download a HLDMUpdate tool to update all of your files. Could take an hour or more. You have to open ports 27015, and 27005 in your exceptions tab under fire wall. One for each tcp, and udp. Bam, done, start server, invite friends.

I'm working with the same problem and am stuck. Not sure where to update, and I think i've done damage somehow. Beerdude has been a big help, but i'm going nowhere now. In addition the the "differnet location" message, i'm trying to reload the settings in 'create a server'

Anyone have any thoughts for us?

You may have got more help if you made a more helpful title. What is " Help please, should be easy for pros " supposed to mean to someone looking at the threads? You may as well have typed " Arrrrrgghhhhh! " or " Not working ". SHEESH! Maybey more people would have read it if the title was more like " Cant connect friends to server" or something similar, so everyone would know what it was about, and go in if they could help, instead of passing over another "Arrrrrgggh" type thread. Just a suggestion. If everyone made thread titles that didn't explain what they were actually about, we would have a forum full of crap, and no-one could find the answers they were looking for! You must be Australian.

Stop whinging, Your certainly a New Zealander.

I also have the same problems as you, there never seems to be any straight answers for a problem that so many people experience.

I even went so far to ask Valve in Steam Support. After a MONTH of waiting I got this reply:

Yep we do whine a lot, have high crime, low pay, high unemployment, gangs, and a rediculous government among other things. The only good thing we have going for us is- we dont have many Australians living here! LOL ;)

But seriously, I feel your pain. Dumb thread titles piss me off.
