Help! Synopsis Of HL1?

Hey, I'm loving HL2, but feel I'm missing something since I've never played the first game. Can someone please give or direct me to a run-down of the plot of the first game? Make it as detailed as necessary and feel free to include all the spoilers you'd like. Thanks!

I bought hl1 for my comp years ago(hard copy) but now i want to replay it. How do i get support for XP since XP was not around then? Will it install and run fine?

In New Mexico, there is a huge underground Research Facility called Black Mesa. A team of scientists there (named the Lambda Team) discovered a way to open a portal to another dimension. With their limited technology, they could only reach the first world in this new dimension, the borderworld closest to our dimension, called Xen. Manned missions were run into Xen to explore this new frontier. Strange crystals of unknown origin that seemed to be indigineous to this world were brought back to Earth to be studied.

The Administrator of Black Mesa, Dr. Wallace Breen (for reasons still a mystery to the player) was adamant about using these crystals in experiments, despite their inherent dangers. Dr. Gordon Freeman, a young M.I.T. graduate, was a part of one of these experiments. Under orders from the Administrator, he and his collegues manually inserted one of the Xen crystals into their Anti-Mass Spectrometer and created an unexpected Resonance Cascade. This cascade tore a huge portal open to Xen, and the aliens of that world poured through in apparent retaliatory action against the stealing of their resources and the interloping of the Black Mesa Team. They flooded in, destroying much of the complex and killing every scientist who got in their way. Gordon Freeman fought against them in an effort to escape the crumbling underground complex and save his friends.

Soon, the Government was alerted to the situation and the Military was dispatched to handle the situation. The commandos sent were under orders to destroy the alien menace and also execute the science team, effectively keeping the incident under wraps.

Gordon Freeman fought back against the aliens and the soldiers, becoming both a revered hero for the scientists and a feared enemy of the forces set against him.

Cutting their losses, the Military pulled out of Black Mesa, leaving Freeman and the remainder of the employees to fend for themselves. Some of the soldiers were left behind, including Corporal Adrian Shepherd. Freeman's human enemies now found themselves in his shoes--fighting for their survival against the aliens. After the failure of the commandos, Black Ops assassins were called upon to clean up the rest by setting a nuclear warhead. Corporal Shepherd did battle with the assassins and deactivated the nuclear device, saving Black Mesa for a little while longer.

Meanwhile, a victim of his own heroic status, Gordon Freeman was called upon by the surviving scientists to bravely venture to Xen and stop the alien assault by destroying their leader, a giant creature named Nihilanth. Alone he traveled to the other world by way of the Lambda Core's original portal and traversed the alien world.

Back on Earth, a security guard named Barney Calhoun led a small group of surviving scientists out of Black Mesa and escaped the soldiers and assassins for good. These men were some of the only survivors of Black Mesa.

Still trapped within the bowels of Black Mesa, Colonel Shepherd did battle with The Pit Worm, a Xen Lord which transported itself to this world to lead the alien forces. After killing it, Shepherd was confronted by a mysterious operative known only as "The G-Man". This man, his employers unknown, reactivated the nuclear device and captured Shepherd, claiming that he was to be protected in a place where he could tell no one about what he had seen. Shepherd hasn't been seen since.

On Xen, Gordon Freeman fought his way through the alien constructs and killed the Nihilanth, ending the alien incursion. While he was away, Black Mesa was destroyed by the reactivated nuclear warhead. Immediately after his victory against the aliens, Freeman was apprehended by the G-Man and given a simple choice. Gordon could work for him, using the talents he honed in Black Mesa to do this mysterious man's bidding, or die.

Half-Life 2 assumes you chose the former.

THANKS! That really helps to clear things up with the great story so far. One question though, how come these aliens, which seem pretty civilized and technologicaly advenced in this game, have all these weird alien monsters such as those head eating, zombie making turkey looking things? How come these monsters don't seem to attack the aliens as well? (if this is ever addressed) Thanks again!
