Hi i'm really sorry if this has been posted a million times but i've been searching the internet for ages and can't seem to get an answer. I just recently got a xbox 360 controller that i can plug into my computer and use (the controller works fine) but i dunno how to get it working with half life 2. When i select joystick look i can look (as you do with the mouse) with the controller but i can't set any buttons. i.e. i want to be albe to use the controller as if i was playing it on the xbox. If any one can help me with this that would be great.

it should be possible. You will need to create a joystick.cfg file in this folder:

J:\Program Files\Steam\SteamApps\<account name>\half-life 2\hl2\cfg (replace J: with the drive you have steam installed on.) It might also be under Program Files\Valve\Steam instead of just Steam.

This is the config that worked for my PS2 controller. Might need to make some changes but it's a start. Enable Joystick in game also after you've created the file.

or you can search for a program called pinnacle game profiler

Thanks for the support guys (or gals) i'll reckon i'll try the programe first, i have no idea how to do the other one  .

I'd like to know where you can buy controllers for your PC because I'd sure as hell get one, I find controllers a lot easier than keyboards but this is probably because I've been a console gamer my whole life because my PC sucks ass and always has done, when I get a new PC next year I'll be much more of a PC gamer buying EP1 2 and 3 (if it's out by then which it most likely will be)

They have them at a lot of game retail shops, or internet stores..Newegg has them for pretty good prices..

I was thinking about getting an adapter, N64 to USB a while back, for Project64..

I have project64, you got a working MK64 ROM? Because that would be el grande

I don't think I do :|

I got most of my ROMs from RomHustler.net, maybe they have a good working one...

I would suggest console controler with usb adapter... i have a the logitech ps2 wireless controler with an adapter for the pc... its great. and actually that program mentioned before, pinnical, will automatically pick up that you have a playstation 2 controler hooked up trough a usp adapter, i was freak'n amazed! really, i dont see why it could'nt find any other console controlers.... but i love the keyboard and mouse for my fps's, Im gonna get the program for buddies that come over who strickly console game, they cant seem to figure out the stupid easy w,s,a,d thing...

oh here is the link to where you can download the trial version for pinnical game... thing... what ever its called.

Theres another good program called Joy2Key.

I've tried a whole buch, the free ones dont usally support the joy stick and if they do they only support one, I tried like all the freeware ones at download.com and not many of them are very good.

Hey, congratts on Moderator status, Login,

Anyways, I suggest you use a mouse and keyboard, waay less hassle.

i'l probably get the xbox 360 controller because instead of the buttons like you have on the PS2 controller you have a proper trigger which gives an fps a much better feel

Well the 360 controller is the best one to set up cause it's just USB and it finds the drivers from the internet and it's all good. I'm just disapointed that Half Life doesn't just have gamepad support as standard, seems like a simple thing to have on a really good and modern game. oh well. Thanks for the help guys
