Here's a challenge...

Someone PLEASE try and solve this:

My pc is freezing when i try and run internet explorer or MSN or anything that generally uses the interent. IE is the main problem exe. I have to give it five or ten minutes before it then runs fine.

In the taskmanager i have four copies of SVCHOST.EXE running. Obviously this is abnormal. When i try and close a certain one of them (couldn't specify which) i get a window saying the system will be shutdown in 60 seconds?!

And then...yep...you guessed it...windows shuts down. HELP

Well thats normal when you try to shutdown a scvchost.exe, and im not sure its abnormal to have multiple amounts of them on at once, sometimes i have it too...

try running ad aware or a virus checker first. Then do windows update, then windows repair.

nah, something to do with the RPC buffer overflow. lays ruin to my cpu cycle.
can't install windows update as this could just seal the problem in

well...that was odd

I have four instances of SVCHOST.exe running, it's normal, or so I've been told. But people have been known to create viruses with executables named SCVHOST.exe or SVCHOST(2).exe, so just make sure you double check.

i'm pretty sure it is a virus i just don't know which one. My virus detector doesn't pick it up but it exhibits all of the characteristics of a virus

i've seen adware that will make you unable to use common internet-accessing programs.

i went to my gf's friend's house to fix her computer because IE wouldn't start...but if you typed an address in to any other folder window (like control panel), you could access web pages.

so i started closing stuff in the task manager that i knew was not windows-related...once i closed the magic one, like 10 copies of IE opened...once for each time she tried to open it :\ i just ran ad-aware and spybot and her computer was like 203423x faster and worked perfectly well.

spyware should be freakin illegal...sometimes it's just as destructive as a virus...and it would be considered a virus...except spyware doesn't spread itself to other compters...or cause dos attacks

anyway jonny, what virus program are you using and have you run adaware and spybot?

ran adawre last night and it aint the problem. Also being the dextrous computer geek i am i tried launching a website using a normal folder address bar but it still hangs. Used norton and 'the cleaner'. no avail
